Vicario: Tottenham lacked ‘effort and mentality’ in Monaco draw

Guglielmo Vicario admitted that Tottenham simply did not show the right “effort and mentality” during their goalless draw against Monaco in the Champions League.

The Italian goalkeeper was easily the standout performer on the night, pulling off several world-class saves that kept Spurs from suffering a damaging defeat in France.

Despite his heroics, Vicario’s frustration was clear as he reflected on a match where his teammates struggled to match the intensity and quality of their opponents.

Tottenham were second-best for most of the evening, failing to find any real rhythm or attacking threat.

Monaco, playing under new manager Sebastien Pocognoli for the first time at home, looked sharper and more determined from the first whistle.

Folarin Balogun and Takumi Minamino constantly tested Vicario, who stood tall with crucial stops to deny both men. Without his composure and reflexes, the result could have easily gone Monaco’s way.

Speaking after the game, Vicario did not hide his disappointment in the overall display. “Sometimes you’re needed and today was definitely the night,” he told TNT Sports.

“It was not the best performance from us, so a lot to work on and learn from. The level in the Champions League is very high, and if you miss some basics, it’s hard to compete with a good team.”

His words summed up the night perfectly Tottenham were fortunate. While Vicario displayed brilliance and leadership at the back, the outfield players offered little to complement his efforts.

There was a noticeable lack of urgency, creativity, and cohesion in attack, leaving fans wondering where the spark has gone.

Despite remaining unbeaten in their European campaign, Tottenham’s lack of drive was concerning.

Vicario’s heroics may have earned them a point, but his comments serve as a wake-up call. If Spurs truly want to compete at the highest level, they will need more than luck they will need hunger, discipline, and the mentality their goalkeeper demanded.
