Tottenham Wonderkid Earns First Senior International Call-Up Before Making Spurs Debut

Tottenham Hotspur prospect Mason Melia is set to receive his first senior call-up for the Republic of Ireland, despite not yet making an appearance for Tottenham Hotspur under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson confirmed that the 18-year-old striker will be included in the squad for friendlies against Qatar on May 28 and Canada on June 5.

A Major Step for One of Ireland’s Brightest Talents

Melia joined Spurs in January after they agreed a deal worth an initial £1.6 million with St Patrick’s Athletic—a record fee for a League of Ireland player. The move could rise significantly with add-ons, and Tottenham secured him on a long-term contract running until 2031.

The teenager arrived with impressive senior experience for his age: 98 first-team appearances, 25 goals, and 8 assists for St Pat’s, along with regular involvement for Ireland’s U21s.

Injury Setbacks but Rapid Progress

A back issue followed by a chest infection delayed his introduction to Spurs’ U21 side, but since returning he has scored goals and been invited to train with De Zerbi’s first team. Although he has yet to make a Premier League matchday squad, his development has been strong enough to convince Hallgrimsson.

“Mason is in the next camp,” the Ireland boss said while speaking in Spain ahead of a friendly with Grenada. “I haven’t watched his most recent U21 matches for Spurs, but our U21 manager Jim Crawford has.”

Linking Up With a Former Spurs Talent

During the camp, Melia will join up with former Tottenham forward Troy Parrott, who has become a key figure for both club and country following his breakout season at AZ Alkmaar.
