Spurs star admits he is keen to taste Champions League football for the first time ever

Although Guglielmo Vicario acknowledged that he is eager to see Champions League football next summer, he emphasised that he and his colleagues must play each game as it comes.

In the battle for fourth place, Spurs go to Villa Park on Sunday for what looks to be a classic six-point match. The Villans are five points ahead of the Lilywhites, who have a game in hand.

Vicario will need to stop Ollie Watkins, one of the Premier League’s best scorers. Prior to the match, the Spurs player expressed his respect for Emi Martinez, his opponent.

“There are a lot of top goalkeepers in the Premier League. I like to watch every goalkeeper in the way he behaves, the way he saves, and his style of goalkeeping,” he said to ESPN when asked which goalkeepers he preferred.

“If I had to choose only one goalkeeper in the league, it would be [Aston Villa’s] Emi Martínez and [Liverpool’s] Alisson. They play with such risk and take calculated risks when playing from the back, and they are very brave to go out and clear situations, so of course I look to other keepers.”

Vicario has never played in the Champions League, in contrast to many of his Tottenham teammates, and the 27-year-old says he is eager to put himself to the test in the continent’s top club competition.

“It is important for everyone, trying to go in the Champions League,” he said in response to a question about how crucial it is for Spurs to return to the competition. Of course, doing that is one of our objectives. Since we play teams in the Premier League every week and it’s difficult against everyone, we are aware of how difficult it is.

“I think we should just concentrate on trying to do our best, game by game, and not overthink the outcome. Our current goal is to strive to win the next game; if you endeavour to do so, you might be able to reflect on your current situation after the conclusion of the season.

It is undoubtedly among the greatest competitions in the world. One of the greatest football spectacles in the world is what I watch while I’m at home.

Vicario is certain that Tottenham has a bright future, though, regardless of what occurs on Sunday and the remainder of the season.

“We just have to stay calm and try to focus and work hard every day because I think we can be something special in the next seasons,” he continued, adding that it was their first season as a team under the new manager.

Tottenham needs to qualify for the Champions League in order to draw elite players into the team for the upcoming summer and close the gap with teams like Man City and Liverpool.

Postecoglou’s project could thus be significantly impacted by Sunday’s game, which is perhaps the greatest match of the Australian’s tenure thus far.
