Spurs have a Van de Ven & Romero hybrid out on loan who is as big a talent as Bergvall – opinion

Another reason why Daniel Levy chose Ange Postecoglou as first-team boss is that it gives Tottenham Hotspur a spirit that wasn’t there last season.

In the past few years, big stars like Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte have lost their jobs. Last season’s disappointing eighth-place finish meant that something had to be changed or they would fall further behind the top teams in the Premier League.

It was sad when Harry Kane was sold to Bayern Munich in August, but it was to be expected. The captain of the Three Lions was about to enter the last year of his contract and was looking for a new challenge at 30 years old, having never played in Europe or won a trophy in a record-setting career down N17.

Even so, Son Heung-min and Richarlison aren’t having a hard time scoring goals, and new players like James Maddison, Brennan Johnson, and Timo Werner have helped Tottenham get back into the race for the top four.

But the real success of Spurs’ early-stage system lies in the improvement of their defence, which was made stronger after a terrible 2022–23 season in which a lot of goals destroyed any dreams of reaching their goals.

How well Van de Ven and Romero are doing this year

Things went badly at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season, and the main problem was a weak defence. This problem was fixed in spades when goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and athletic center-back Micky van de Ven were brought in to fit Postecoglou’s method.

Wenger paid £43 million to get Van de Ven from Wolfsburg. He has been a huge success so far, and Arsene Wenger has called him “absolutely exceptional” since he got to England.

Sofascore says that in 17 Premier League games so far, he has finished 95% of his passes, recovered the ball 5.9 times, cleared it 2.9 times, and won 63% of his dribbles and 68% of his ground duels. It’s not an accident that Spurs were having a rough patch before Christmas at the same time that the Dutchman was healing from a hamstring injury.

Cristian Romero, his partner, may have been at the root of the problems last season, but there’s no doubting his world-class skills. Having a confident peer with him works wonders.

In fact, Romero is one of the best central defenders in Europe’s top five leagues for goals scored, shot creation, pass completion, progressive passes, tackles made, interceptions made, and goals scored over the past year. He is also one of the best defenders for tackles made and interceptions made per 90 minutes.

With so many great qualities, it’s clear that the 2022 World Cup winner is one of the best players in the Premier League. Some may question Lionel Messi’s claim that he is “the best defender in the world right now,” but Messi isn’t that far off.

The future looks good, and while the new senior players are exciting, the real star of Tottenham’s new era is the amazing crop of young players coming up through the ranks. Luka Vuskovic may be the best of the bunch.

How and why Spurs got Luka Vuskovic

Vuskovic was one of the first young players at Tottenham to join this wave of activity. He signed with the club in September 2023, when he was only 16 years old, and was due to arrive in 2025. The deal was worth about £12 million.

For now, he is staying in his home country of Croatia to play for Hajduk Split. There, he will continue to improve his skills and become a defender of Premier League quality. Talent scout Jacek Kulig has already called him a “truly amazing” kid.

Vuskovic is still very young, but he is already showing a lot of promise. He has played in 11 adult games this season, six for Hajduk Split and five on loan for Radomiak Radom in Poland.

The young giant has been excellent in the Polish Ekstralasa, scoring twice in just four starts and averaging 3.6 ball recoveries and 5.6 clearances per game while also dribbling the ball perfectly 100% of the time and winning an amazing 71% of his aerial battles.

Without a doubt, the 17-year-old will move to London next year to join Tottenham’s youth team, which already has a lot of players who could make an impact in Postecoglou’s adult team.

Another young player that was recently signed is Lucas Bergvall, who is one of the most exciting up-and-comers around. Vuskovic is just as good, and the Lilywhites should do well in the future.

As talented as Lucas Bergvall, U21 stars like Jamie Donley and Alfie Dorrington look like real possibilities. Levy also snagged Barcelona’s move for teenage midfielder Lucas Bergvall in January, and the player joined the team this summer.

According to one expert, Bergvall is a “generational” talent. He has certainly caught the eye in Sweden, where he has completed 88% of his passes and 68% of his dribbles this season in the top flight.

Although Vuskovic is younger, he has shown that he is good at many different aspects of the defensive game. His speed, ability to make plays, and strong defence make him a bit of a mix between Van de Ven and Romero.

Also, Manchester City, the defending Premier League champions, was very interested in the player before he picked Spurs. This shows how high he could go.

It will take a few years before Vuskovic gets a regular starting spot at N17, but he has all the qualities of a world-class centre back, and with Bergvall creating chances ahead of him, Tottenham could be about to enter a golden age.
