Despite James Maddison’s incredible season-long form for Tottenham, Harry Redknapp does not believe the England midfielder will start the summer’s European Championship.
Harry Redknapp has discussed the reasons he believes James Maddison won’t start for England in the 2024 European Championship. Under manager Ange Postecoglou, the 27-year-old midfielder—who cost £40 million to acquire from Leicester—has been playing at a high level, tallying three goals and seven assists.
Maddison has been a major contributor to Tottenham’s ascent to the top of the Premier League standings, despite suffering an injury during a recent game against Chelsea. He’s back in play now, and his goal is to help Spurs qualify for the Champions League before the conclusion of the year.
Though Maddison may be included to the team, former Tottenham manager Redknapp believes he won’t likely start for England during their Euro campaign. Like Manchester City’s Jack Grealish, he implies that Maddison isn’t exactly Gareth Southgate’s “cup of tea”.
Redknapp believes that the public’s desire is more likely to be the reason for Maddison’s participation on the squad.
James Maddison is undoubtedly the kind of player who might return to his pre-injury level and go on to make a major effect for England in summer, but the issue is, I don’t believe Gareth Southgate will choose him, Redknapp said to BetVictor.
He’s not exactly Gareth’s cup of tea, in my opinion. It’s strange how Gareth can attract guys who are like that; Jack Grealish was never exactly Gareth’s style.
“Grealish ultimately joined the England squad as a result of popular demand. Although he had previously been added to the team, Gareth didn’t actually play him, therefore many wanted him in there.
“I don’t think Maddison will make Gareth’s squad for the summer’s European Championship.”
