Tottenham’s free Toney alternative looks better by the day as Postecoglou sent message
With young talent Will Lankshear making waves in the junior levels, Tottenham’s next long-term striker may be right under Ange Postecoglou’s nose. Spurs may decide not to pay a nine-figure transfer fee on Ivan Toney this summer as a result of the 18-year-old’s ascent, freeing up funds for other uses.
Lankshear scored three goals in eleven minutes for Tottenham Under-21s on Saturday, and there are increasing cries for Postecoglou to give him a chance in the first team. Spurs have proven their trust in the rangy striker by awarding him a contract that will last until the summer of 2026. The attacker has already earned caps for England up to the Under-19 level.
This season in Premier League 2, the youthful player has scored 11 goals in as many games and averaged one goal per 72 minutes. With Jamie Donley, another academy graduate who has been given opportunities to shine in the senior ranks since the beginning of December, Lankshear has forged a powerful pair.
Donley has made three Premier League and one FA Cup appearances as a substitute. Additionally, he provided assistance for all three of Lankshear’s goals on Saturday, sending a strong message to Postecoglou.
The 19-year-old said, “Yes, definitely,” to a question from football.london about whether Lankshear is talented enough to succeed him in the first team. He’s a lovely kid with a fantastic attitude.
“He is doing really well and simply keeps scoring goals. He just has to keep working hard and keeping his head down; I believe he’s absolutely talented enough to earn a shot, so ideally I was doing extremely well and I got my opportunity.”
Promoting attackers from their younger levels has worked well for Spurs in the past; this was the case with Harry Kane in 2011, who went on to score 280 goals in 435 games. Although Lankshear still has a ways to go before filling Kane’s shoes, Postecoglou has an intriguing possibility on his hands given his rapid ascent through the younger ranks.
Allowing Lankshear to demonstrate his abilities at the senior level might save Tottenham millions of dollars when they go after Toney during the summer transfer window.

After serving an eight-month betting suspension, Brentford’s star scorer has scored goals nonstop and the team is apparently willing to demand up to £100 million for him. It’s also known that Chelsea and Arsenal are monitoring the 27-year-old.
Since Kane joined Bayern Munich, Son Heung-min and Richarlison have mostly split the centre striker role for Tottenham, albeit none of them is a true front-runner.
