Tottenham to break transfer record for EPL forward, and midfielder sale could partially fund deal
Tottenham Faces Significant Financial Outlay for Premier League Forward Amid Midfielder Sale Talks
As Tottenham Hotspur continues to vie for a top-four finish and a coveted spot in the Champions League next season, reports suggest that the club may need to break their transfer record to secure the services of another established Premier League forward.
Additionally, Spurs are exploring the possibility of partially funding this potential acquisition through the sale of one of their midfielders.
Under the stewardship of Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham has shown promising signs of resurgence following a challenging 2022/23 season marred by managerial changes.
The Australian manager, who arrived last summer after a successful tenure at Celtic, has overseen a shift in playing style and fortunes at the club.
Among the signings made under Postecoglou’s reign was winger Brennan Johnson, acquired from Nottingham Forest for a club-record fee of £47.5 million on deadline day last summer.
Now, Tottenham is reportedly eyeing another forward player from Forest in the form of England Under-21 international Morgan Gibbs-White. However, securing Gibbs-White’s services may come at a significant financial cost for Spurs.
According to reports from Football Insider, Tottenham has been informed that any bid for Gibbs-White must exceed the £47.5 million paid for Johnson.
Bids below £50 million are unlikely to be entertained, and if competing clubs enter the fray, Spurs could be compelled to surpass their existing transfer record of £54 million, set when signing Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon in 2019.
Simultaneously, Tottenham is actively seeking to offload some of their current players during the summer transfer window to balance their books.
Among the players on the chopping block is midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, whose dissatisfaction with his lack of playing time has prompted speculation about his departure.
Hojbjerg, whose contract expires in 2025, has endured a prolonged spell on the sidelines, having not started a Premier League game in nearly two months.
Valued in the range of £20-25 million, the Danish midfielder could attract interest from clubs seeking his services, with Juventus reportedly among the suitors eyeing the former Southampton player.
As Tottenham navigates the intricacies of the summer transfer market, the prospect of securing a high-profile forward while offloading surplus midfield talent underscores the club’s ambition to strengthen its squad and compete at the highest level.
