Tottenham told how midfielder sold for just £10M would be playing under Postecoglou right now
Harry Winks, a former midfield player, “would be playing” under Ange Postecoglou right now if he hadn’t been traded to Leicester in the summer, Tottenham has been informed.
After being a part of Spurs since he was five years old, the 28-year-old left the club to sign a three-year contract with the Championship team for an estimated £10 million.
Winks has become a vital member of Leicester’s team, which is now six points ahead at the top of the Championship table and is vying for an instant promotion back to the top division under Enzo Maresca’s direction at the King Power Stadium.
Despite the Foxes’ recent two-game losing streak, he has made 35 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring twice.
Though he acknowledges his strong play in the current campaign, Jamie O’Hara, a former Tottenham midfielder, thinks that if Winks had stayed, Postecoglou would have had a wonderful asset in him.
O’Hara said, “In my opinion, Harry Winks is a great player; I’ve always enjoyed him,” in an interview with Grosvenor Sport. He struggled at Tottenham and I believe Antonio Conte sent him away because he wasn’t his kind of player, but I’ll tell you what—if he was there right now with Ange Postecoglou, he would be on the pitch!
“He plays in midfield with enthusiasm and is an Ange-type player; he retains the ball and tries to pass forward. The fact that I believe Winks is a superior player than Oliver Skipp means that I would have retained him at Tottenham.
“He’s proven his abilities and has been a terrific addition for Leicester.” He most likely entered there thinking, “This is a Premier League team; I may have to suffer in the Championship for a season, but this is my path to starting regularly in the Premier League.”
More charming than Skipp and Hojbjerg
There is undoubtedly a compelling case to be made that Winks is much more compatible with Postecoglou’s playing philosophy than either Skipp or Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who performed better under Conte and Jose Mourinho’s more cautious coaching styles.
once leading the team in the Champions League final against Liverpool in 2019, Winks actually signed a new five-year contract with the organisation. However, once Mauricio Pochettino left the team a few months later, Winks’ situation deteriorated.
Ultimately, he signed a loan deal with Italian team Sampdoria for the 2022–2023 season before making the permanent move to Leicester last summer.
Last Saturday, Tottenham’s starting midfield duo of Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr found it difficult to contain the vitality and energy of the Wolves midfield, which was a far cry from their play during the first ten games of the season.
They seemed to be still dealing with the affects of competing in the African Cup of Nations in January and February, however, so they ought to be better off taking a weekend off following Spurs’ scheduled matchup with Chelsea, the Carabao Cup winners.
