At right-back, Pedro Porro is expected to keep his place despite a difficult season overall. Tottenham currently lack reliable alternatives in that area, and while the Spaniard has sometimes struggled defensively, his energy and attacking quality still make him an important part of De Zerbi’s setup.
Kevin Danso is likely to continue in central defence after gradually adapting to the demands of Premier League football. The Austrian defender has brought aggression, physicality, and leadership to Tottenham’s back line, qualities Spurs desperately need in high-pressure matches. His ability to compete strongly in duels and contribute during set-pieces could prove extremely important against Chelsea.
Alongside him, Micky van de Ven is expected to captain the side once again with Cristian Romero still unavailable. The Dutch defender has become one of Tottenham’s most important players this season, not only because of his defensive ability but also due to his calmness under pressure. De Zerbi will rely heavily on Van de Ven’s leadership and pace to help control Chelsea’s dangerous attack.
On the left side of defence, Destiny Udogie should continue ahead of Djed Spence. Since De Zerbi took charge, the Italian full-back has looked more confident and aggressive going forward while also improving defensively. His athleticism and ability to carry the ball up the pitch make him a key part of Tottenham’s transition play.
In midfield, De Zerbi faces some critical tactical choices. João Palhinha is expected to start in the deeper role because of his physical presence and defensive intelligence. Chelsea possess technical midfielders capable of dominating possession if given too much freedom, and Palhinha’s ability to break up attacks could become essential at Stamford Bridge.
Rodrigo Bentancur should partner him in midfield after producing several strong performances in recent weeks. The Uruguayan appears to be rediscovering his rhythm after a difficult period and has looked increasingly comfortable in De Zerbi’s system. Further forward, Conor Gallagher could play a hugely important role against his former club. The England international knows Stamford Bridge well and will likely be asked to lead Tottenham’s pressing from midfield. One of De Zerbi’s biggest selection dilemmas surrounds James Maddison. The playmaker is still working his way back toward full fitness, and while many supporters would love to see him start such a massive match, the Italian manager may decide against risking him from the opening whistle.
