Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is reportedly considering a shock return from international retirement to help France at the 2026 World Cup.
Lloris, 39, last played for France in the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina, after which he announced his retirement from international football. At the time, he stepped away as France’s most-capped player with 145 appearances, saying he wanted to focus on club football and family life.
However, according to reports from Le Parisien, a recent injury to Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier has reopened the door for Lloris to be recalled. Chevalier, who had been expected to serve as France’s third-choice goalkeeper, suffered a thigh injury in training that could rule him out for several weeks and potentially the rest of the season, jeopardising his World Cup chances.
France manager Didier Deschamps is set to announce his squad on 14 May, and Lloris is now being considered as a possible emergency option. If selected, he would likely serve as third-choice goalkeeper behind Mike Maignan and Brice Samba.
Since retiring from international duty, Lloris has continued his career at club level in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles FC, where he has made over 100 appearances.
Lloris spent 12 years at Tottenham Hotspur, making more than 400 appearances and becoming one of the club’s most influential players before leaving in 2024.
