Ange to finally cash in on Tottenham flop who earns over 5x more than Star player – opinion

Following a Premier League season where Tottenham Hotspur went unbeaten in their first ten games but ultimately missed out on Champions League qualification, the club faces a critical summer of transfer activity.

Manager Ange Postecoglou has demonstrated his potential to thrive in England’s top flight. Now, Chairman Daniel Levy must invest wisely to support his vision for success in North London.

While acquiring the right players is essential, Tottenham must also focus on offloading those who have not met expectations. One such player is Sergio Reguilon, who arrived with high hopes but has struggled to deliver, making his departure crucial to freeing up resources.

Tottenham signed left-back Sergio Reguilon for £32 million, expecting him to secure the full-back position for years to come.

Reguilon was highly regarded, having been named La Liga’s best left-back in 2019/20 while on loan with Sevilla, where he also won the Europa League. However, his tenure at Tottenham has been disappointing.

After two years with Spurs, Reguilon went on loan to Atlético Madrid, where injuries plagued his performance, resulting in just two La Liga starts. Subsequent loan spells at Manchester United and Brentford also failed to reignite his career, with neither club opting to sign him permanently.

Reguilon has made only 67 appearances for Tottenham since his big-money move, and the club has already invested in Destiny Udogie to replace him.

Reguilon, who signed a five-year contract in 2020, is set to be out of contract in 2025. Given his hefty wages and lack of contribution, it is unlikely that Tottenham will renew his deal.

This summer represents the last viable opportunity for the club to recoup some of their £32 million investment.

Despite not being Tottenham’s highest earner, Reguilon’s salary represents a significant financial burden, especially given his lack of appearances.

According to Capology, Reguilon earns £53,000 per week, amounting to £2.7 million annually. Since his last appearance for Tottenham, he has earned an astounding £5.4 million in wages, draining the club’s resources.

Reguilon’s weekly wage is over five times higher than that of current transfer target Desire Doue, who earns £8,000 per week. Spurs are reportedly willing to invest £60 million in the 19-year-old Rennes midfielder, but funding such a move could be challenging without offloading Reguilon.

Tottenham is not alone in their pursuit of Desire Doue. Bayern Munich and PSG are also interested in the French youngster. To facilitate a move for Doue, Tottenham must consider selling Reguilon, who now has a £10 million price tag. This sale would significantly boost their chances of landing the highly sought-after talent.

The move for Reguilon has proven disastrous for both the player and the club. Tottenham must offload him to remain competitive in the transfer market, while Reguilon needs a transfer to revive his stuttering career.

Tottenham Hotspur’s summer transfer window is crucial for the club’s future success. Balancing the acquisition of new talents with the offloading of underperforming players like Sergio Reguilon is vital.

By making strategic decisions and investing wisely, Tottenham can build a squad capable of achieving their goals and returning to the Champions League.
