Tottenham have now dodged a bullet with Kane replacement now at crisis club
Spurs seem to have escaped a bullet, at least temporarily, by not acquiring the highly-coveted striker Gift Orban. The 21-year-old’s outstanding play for Belgian team Gent is said to have made him a contender to replace Harry Kane in the summer.
Orban finished the previous season with 20 goals in 22 games, concluding a fantastic breakthrough year in European football. But given his lackluster play this season, Spurs may have made the correct decision in passing on a move.
In 17 appearances throughout the first half of the season, the youthful player only managed three goals. Spurs declined to finalize a deal, therefore Lyon, a crisis team in Ligue 1, took a chance on the star.
In 2020–21 and 2020–22, Lyon had net losses of £138,645,915 (€162.5 million), mostly as a result of COVID-19 and more general financial problems in French football. Former president Jean-Michel Aulas resigned in May of last year.
US investor John Textor, whose Eagle Football Holdings firm owns shares in Crystal Palace, Brazilian team Botafogo, Belgian team RWD Molenbeek, and FC Florida, took over as the club’s new owner.
Despite his promises to “spend” and “go after PSG,” Textor has not followed through on his promises. The 58-year-old is not only to blame for the club’s downward spiral in performance, which was brought on by financial constraints for a team that won seven Ligue 1 championships in the 2010s.
Textor’s Lyon has embraced a culture of relying on youthful players. Despite being 16th in the 18-team division, an inexperienced club spent a large portion of the first half of the season near the bottom of the league.
Orban joins a team that has already appointed a third manager for the current campaign. It can take him some time to get used to a squad without confidence.
