Tottenham star to be axed by postecoglou after what he did v Everton

Guglielmo Vicario’s recent performances have Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou contemplating benching him, according to former Spurs scout Bryan King.

Vicario has faced criticism in the last few weeks despite his remarkable debut in North London after joining from Serie A team Empoli for £17.2 million in the summer (Sky Sports News, June 27, 2023).

The Italy international’s confidence seemed to have suffered following his involvement in Manchester City’s late victory in the FA Cup fourth-round match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Friday, January 26. At one time, it looked as if he could do no wrong.

On Saturday, February 3, Spurs and Everton tied 2-2 at Goodison Park, raising concerns about his ability to handle crosses once again. King has hinted that the goalie may now be watching over his shoulder.

“I thought the first goal was down to him, and there is a question mark over the second goal as well,” King remarked in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News.

I don’t like how he handles situations when under duress, like he demonstrated against Manchester City. Most of the time, he seems unable to decide between punching and catching the ball.

“Punching the ball away is your only choice when you are under so much pressure.

He is Postecoglou’s first choice for good reason—he produces huge saves. Maybe he should be informed that he is not indispensable and kept on his toes instead.

“I think he will play against Brighton, but if a similar problem arises, I could see him being benched for a few of games and Fraser Forster entering the lineup. Vicario could benefit from taking a break from the limelight for a while.

In relation to form

Since Friday, December 15, when Spurs defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0, they have not maintained a spotless record in the Premier League.

Vicario has had to retrieve the ball four times from the back of his goal in only two games this week. Maybe he had such high expectations for himself at the beginning of the season that now, each little error the 26-year-old makes seems disastrous.

Vicario had an excellent debut in the Premier League.

The goalkeeper does seem to be a guy who would benefit from being pulled out of the limelight for the time being, even if he won’t be very worried about losing his job to Forster in the long run.

In the next weeks, teams will be attempting to capitalize on the goalkeeper’s loss of confidence; Spurs and Vicario himself need to make sure that doesn’t happen.
