Chelsea Under-21s were knocked out of the Premier League 2 play-offs at the quarter-final stage after Tottenham Hotspur produced a powerful second-half comeback to win 3–1 at Kingsmeadow on Friday evening.
The young Blues looked dominant early on and took a deserved lead through Shumaira Mheuka, but Spurs responded after the break with goals from Mason Melia, Reiss Russell-Denny, and Leo Black to turn the tie around and advance.
Bright Start and Early Breakthrough
Chelsea flew out of the blocks, opening the scoring inside four minutes. Right-back Genesis Antwi surged forward and slipped a perfectly timed pass into Mheuka, who finished emphatically into the top corner for his 25th goal of the season in all competitions.
The early momentum remained firmly with Chelsea.
Jesse Derry twice struck the woodwork — first rattling the underside of the crossbar before later curling an effort off the far post. Mheuka also hit the bar again from the rebound, completing a frustrating spell where the Blues came agonisingly close to doubling their lead.
Chelsea continued to dominate. Reggie Walsh dictated the tempo from midfield and tested Spurs keeper Carey Bloedorn with a driven effort, while further strikes from Kiano Dyer and Mheuka narrowly missed the target.
Tottenham’s only major chance of the half came just before the interval when James Rowswell flicked a header against the crossbar, but Chelsea still went into the break with a well-earned 1–0 advantage.
Tottenham Rally After the Break
The second half began with Chelsea again on the front foot as Derry forced a sharp save from Bloedorn. But Spurs found a route back into the match moments later.
A tangle in the box between Landon Emenalo and James Wilson saw the referee point to the penalty spot. Merrick brilliantly saved Melia’s initial kick, but the Tottenham forward reacted quickest to bury the rebound and level the match.
Chelsea tried to respond quickly. Antwi delivered a dangerous cross that Emenalo headed just over, while Derry continued to trouble Spurs with direct running and long-range efforts. But the momentum had shifted.
Spurs Seal It With Late Goals
Tottenham took the lead for the first time with 15 minutes left. A sharp counter-attack ended with Leo Black picking out former Chelsea midfielder Reiss Russell-Denny, who struck cleanly from the edge of the area to make it 2–1.
Chelsea pushed men forward in search of an equaliser, but Spurs struck again late on. With two minutes remaining, Wilson burst down the right before crossing into Black, who finished calmly to put the result beyond doubt at 3–1.
Despite eight minutes of added time and continued pressure from the Blues, Tottenham held firm, ending Chelsea’s play-off run and bringing their 2025/26 season to a close.
