‘Pleasure to play with you’: Teammates hail £42m Tottenham player as world’s best after international display

The Tottenham defender will now face either Uruguay or Colombia in the tournament’s final next Monday, hoping to win the Copa America for the second time.

Of course, it’s now been confirmed that Ange Postecoglou will get his wish this summer, and Romero won’t play for Argentina at the Olympics.

The defender had confessed his desire to play for his country is Paris but Postecoglou was understandably keen for the Argentinian to have a rest instead – a crucial member of his project next season.

That being said, Spurs seem likely to welcome a host of new players to boost Postecoglou’s prospects in his second season, and a forward should arrive as a result.

Tottenham have made an enquiry for Lille striker Jonathan David this summer, who has been impressing alongside Romero at Copa America.

Tottenham target Jonathan David criticised for high-boot foul on Cristian Romero

£25m-rated David found the net against Peru for Canada in his country’s second group stage game, but failed to make an impact against Romero and Argentina in their semi-final.

And interestingly, David was considered lucky not to be sent off for a foul in the 32nd minute on Romero, which was deemed a ‘red card’ challenge.

Argentinian source Clarin shared the moment on X when David raised his boot and made significant contact with Romero’s inner thigh.

David was brandished a yellow card for the foul, but many felt as if the Canadian should have been sent off for the untasteful tackle.

Of course, it’s an intriguing moment given it’s not too unlikely that the duo could be teammates next season at Tottenham.

But given his feisty nature, it wouldn’t be the first time that Romero would have had to deal with such an awkward situation.

Romero’s spat with Richarlison whilst he was at Everton was pretty famous, something that was quickly quashed when the Brazilian arrived in north London.

And perhaps this moment with David isn’t quite to that degree, but it’s still quite significant from a Tottenham point of view.

All that being said, once the club are able to off-load Emerson Royal this summer, Tottenham should also be trying to sell Richarlison too.
