Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 4-3 win over Team K-League

Tottenham Hotspur secured another pre-season victory, defeating Team K-League 4-3 in an exciting and fast-paced match. Here are the five key lessons we learned from this encounter:

Heung-min Son Shines Bright

Heung-min Son showcased his exceptional form in front of a home crowd of over 63,000 K-League fans. His first goal was a classic Son finish, cutting inside after a slick setup by Jamie Donley and curling the ball into the top corner.

His second goal saw him maneuver infield off the left, play a one-two with Dejan Kulusevski, and nutmeg a defender before calmly slotting the ball home. Son’s effortless brilliance is a promising sign for Spurs as he seems to be in excellent shape without breaking a sweat.

Jamie Donley: The Emerging Talent

Jamie Donley has emerged as a surprising standout in pre-season. Initially filling in as a makeshift left-back due to Destiny Udogie’s absence, Donley has excelled in the role. His inverted runs from the left flank caused significant problems for Team K-League.

Despite being a forward, his creative skills in tight spaces have made him a valuable asset. If he continues to improve his defensive abilities, Donley could become a key player for Ange Postecoglou this season.

Yang Min-hyuk: A Promising Prospect

New signing Yang Min-hyuk caught the attention of Spurs fans as he played for Team K-League. Starting on the left side of a front three, similar to Heung-min Son, Yang was the home team’s most dangerous player in the first half.

He came close to scoring on several occasions and demonstrated impressive footwork, notably bamboozling Emerson Royal with a clever turn. Yang’s performance suggests he has the potential to make a significant impact at Spurs.

The Battle for the Number Nine Role

With Richarlison injured and no new striker signings imminent, the question of who will start as Spurs’ number nine looms large. Dejan Kulusevski has impressed in a false nine role, adding a goal and an assist to his pre-season tally.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Will Lankshear, a traditional number nine, has also performed well, scoring a couple of goals in pre-season. Both players’ performances give Postecoglou plenty to consider when selecting his Premier League squad for the upcoming season.

Radu Dragusin’s Return

Radu Dragusin returned to action with a 20-minute cameo after a successful European Championships run with Romania. With Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven still on holiday, Spurs are short on center-backs in pre-season.

Although Dragusin appeared off the pace and lacked match sharpness, even miskicking the ball in his own box, his return is a positive development. With more minutes under his belt, Dragusin will likely regain his form and provide valuable depth to the squad.

Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season match against Team K-League offered several insights into the team’s preparations for the upcoming season. Heung-min Son’s sharpness, Jamie Donley’s versatility, and Yang Min-hyuk’s potential are all promising signs.

The competition for the number nine role and Radu Dragusin’s return add further intrigue. As the transfer window progresses and the new season approaches, Spurs fans will be eager to see how these developments translate into competitive action.
