Tottenham Hotspur’s fight for Premier League survival is back in their hands after a huge 2-1 victory over Aston Villa. Combined with West Ham United losing to Brentford, Spurs climbed out of the relegation zone and gave themselves renewed hope heading into the final weeks of the season.
No matter where Tottenham finish this campaign, significant changes are expected in North London this summer. Newly-appointed manager Roberto De Zerbi is already preparing for a major rebuild after signing a long-term contract with the club, and one player he reportedly wants to keep is João Palhinha.
The Portuguese midfielder arrived from Bayern Munich on a season-long loan in August 2025. Although his form dipped after an encouraging start, Palhinha has rediscovered his rhythm under De Zerbi in recent weeks. His decisive goal against Wolves secured Tottenham’s first Premier League win of 2026 and has helped change perceptions around his future at the club.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Palhinha is eager to remain at Tottenham permanently — even if the club suffers relegation.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jacobs explained that Tottenham were initially convinced they would activate the midfielder’s purchase option after a strong start to the season. However, as his performances declined, doubts emerged over whether the club would commit to a permanent deal.
That stance has reportedly shifted again since De Zerbi’s arrival.
Jacobs added that Palhinha’s desire to stay in London goes beyond football reasons. The midfielder is said to value living in England again and also has personal and family motivations for remaining in the capital. Because of that, Tottenham reportedly believe they are in a strong negotiating position, with the player not expected to push for a move away if things become difficult.
The timing could be crucial for Spurs. Injuries have heavily impacted the squad during the run-in, meaning Palhinha’s experience, leadership and physical presence could prove vital in the battle to avoid relegation.
The 30-year-old’s loan deal expires in June, but Tottenham hold an option to buy him permanently for a reported fee between €25m and €30m. With Bayern believed to be open to selling him outright, Palhinha’s commitment to staying could help Tottenham negotiate favourable terms this summer.
Having rediscovered confidence under De Zerbi, the midfielder now has the opportunity to finish the campaign strongly and help guide Spurs to Premier League safety.
