Expert: Tottenham’s injury list is severe and ‘by far worst in PL’ – This is what my analysis shows

Tottenham Hotspur’s struggle to secure their Premier League status this season has been heavily impacted by a relentless injury crisis.

That’s the view of Keith Wyness, the former Everton, Aston Villa and Aberdeen chief executive, who believes Spurs have simply been “unlucky” with the scale of setbacks they’ve endured.

The latest blow came with Xavi Simons, who is set for a lengthy spell out after suffering an ACL injury against Wolves. He joins a growing list of key absentees that has disrupted Tottenham’s campaign from the start.

James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have both missed significant portions of the season, while club captain Cristian Romero is also expected to sit out the remaining matches due to a knee issue. Dominic Solanke is another concern after picking up a thigh injury.

All of this has made life increasingly difficult for Roberto De Zerbi, whose side only recently secured their first league win of the calendar year with victory over Wolves.

Wyness, speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, explained that Tottenham’s injury record stands out compared to the rest of the league. According to him, most Premier League clubs currently have six or fewer players sidelined, while Spurs are dealing with around ten — the highest in the division.

He stressed that while injuries are part of football, the volume and timing of Tottenham’s setbacks have been particularly damaging. Early issues, such as Maddison’s absence, set the tone for a difficult campaign, and the club has struggled to recover ever since.

In Wyness’ view, Spurs have had “the rough end” of injuries this season — a factor he believes has played a major role in their inconsistent form and current position in the table.
