£26M Midfielder admits he lost his love for the game at Tottenham

Harry Winks has acknowledged that he had perhaps lost his passion for football in his last few years at Tottenham, but he has now found it again as a Leicester City player.

Given that a few years ago the midfielder had appeared like a generational talent and had been instrumental in Tottenham’s run to the Champions League final, some may have been startled by Winks’ choice to drop down to the Championship team, Leicester.

The Spurs academy graduate was really singled out by Gareth Southgate himself as someone who might be the engine of the England team for many years to come (ESPN).

But the 28-year-old’s career took a nosedive due to a mix of injuries and being passed over by successive Tottenham managers, which forced him to drop a tier.

With Winks looking outstanding in the Championship, that choice has shown to be wise. The Foxes are now leading the standings by nine points mostly due to the former Tottenham player’s reliable performances.

At Tottenham, Harry Winks had a difficult time

Winks has finally spoken about his difficulties at his home club and acknowledged that he is having the best football season ever.

“Maybe the last two or three years of my time at Spurs was tough, but before that it was amazing and I loved every minute,” the midfielder said in an interview with BBC Sport. That taught me a lot as well; playing less often and feeling less important really shapes your character.

But once again, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Throughout my career, I’ve learned a great deal, and going through that helps you appreciate the highs even more.

In the last several years, when I wasn’t playing and was left out of teams and other things, I think I lost a little bit of my passion for it. It’s hard to rediscover that passion for it, but if you take the courageous step of leaving to try to find it in Italy—which I did—and then come here, it’s probably the most football I’ve ever loved in my career.

In Our Views

In addition to being a true Tottenham supporter, Winks strikes me as a wonderful young man and a role model for professionalism. I am happy to see that he has rekindled his passion for the game, and now that he is confident again, I have no doubt that he will succeed in the Premier League the next season.
