Hugo Lloris gives 2 key reasons why Spurs did not win a trophy with Pochettino
Hugo Lloris, a former captain of Tottenham, has provided an explanation for why the team could not break its protracted trophy drought during his tenure in north London.
Spurs, who last won the League Cup in 2008, are certain to lose this season as well.
Although Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte were unable to convert their teams’ potential into victories, there is now fresh optimism that Ange Postecoglou can assemble a championship-caliber squad.
Lloris was a member of Pochettino’s team when they lost the Champions League final in 2019 and made many threats to win the Premier League. Shortly after Mourinho was fired, they also lost the Carabao Cup final in 2021.
The French goalkeeper said that it would have just taken two or three more elite players to get them over the finish line, despite having a talented squad that includes Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, an excellent Dele Alli, and Mousa Dembele.
He told The Athletic, “Under Pochettino, you could see the progression year after year, and we were very competitive.”
“We had a great chance to win. We needed two or three more players, in my opinion, to fight for success and help him win trophies at the time.
The club felt that we were moving too quickly since they were preoccupied with the new stadium at the time. They lacked the financial cushion that they now possess. We had to replenish that set of guys and add a couple at that point.
In addition to leaving White Hart Lane, Spurs played at Wembley for almost two seasons before moving to Tottenham Stadium, something Lloris believes added to the team’s lack of success.
“We had to move to Wembley when I thought we were most likely to win a trophy,” he said.
“We won the championship at White Hart Lane the previous year.” We had an impressive record of 17 wins and 2 draws. We believed at the time that we could equalize the score if we remained at White Hart Lane, but we relocated to Wembley, which is a different venue.
