Postecoglou: Spurs Paid Price For Not Being Disciplined
The Spurs manager explains how his team’s surprising loss on home turf was partly caused by a sluggish start.
Ange Postecoglou, who was clearly dissatisfied, said, “I’m not a magician,” after Tottenham’s 2-1 home loss to Wolves, which dropped them to fifth place in the Premier League.
Joao Gomes’ brace, either side of Dejan Kulusevski’s goal shortly after halftime, sealed Tottenham’s fourth loss in their previous five encounters with Wolves.
With two games remaining before they meet Crystal Palace on March 2, Postecoglou’s team will have to endure this setback for a week. Aston Villa climbed up to fourth spot, surpassing Spurs.
Postecoglou said, “There’s no tricks, it’s hard work,” when asked how his team might resume their pursuit of a top-four finish.
“I manage football teams; I’m not a wizard. These guys have worked really hard all year. We’ve worked very hard to get to this respectable stage, and we want to continue doing so.
“We had a poor start to the match. We were not that dangerous, but we did a good enough job of controlling the game.
We’ve been hurt a lot this year, but we’ve still played better than we were when we were hurt. Thus, I don’t believe that to be the cause. Overall, we weren’t performing to the best of our abilities.
The 58-year-old said, “We definitely need to start aggressively and attempt to put the opponent on the back foot in order for us to dominate games as we want to. And in the previous two or three games, we haven’t really done that. We used to do that, and it helped us acquire a footing in games that we don’t now have.
“There’s no sense feeling sorry for ourselves; we have two weeks to prepare for our next game and we will work hard.” No matter what has occurred in the past, you have to accept the blows and go on.
You’ve got to make sure you’re ready for the next game. We’ve got two weeks, it’s a different kind of build-up for us, but we’ll use these two weeks to make sure we’re ready for the next game at home.”
