Keith Hackett has claimed that James Maddison could face disciplinary action from the FA after a social media post following Tottenham’s draw with Leeds United sparked controversy.
The former FIFA referee and ex-PGMOL chief, speaking to Football Insider, suggested Maddison’s comments may have crossed the line by questioning the integrity of match officials.
Hackett explained that the FA’s disciplinary department is likely to review the midfielder’s Instagram post to determine whether it breached regulations surrounding criticism of referees.
According to Hackett:
“This post will be reviewed by the FA Disciplinary Department, which will determine if it brings into question the integrity of the referee.
“If they decide that it does, he will be written to and asked for his observations, which then may result in a charge, and if found guilty, may result in a fine or suspension.
“In my opinion, it does question the match official’s integrity, and he should be charged, but watch this space.”
The controversy stems from Maddison’s reaction after Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United in May 2026. The midfielder appeared frustrated after being denied a late penalty appeal and later hinted on social media that referees may be reluctant to make major decisions because of VAR scrutiny.
Hackett reportedly backed the referee’s original decision, insisting no penalty should have been awarded.
The FA has taken a strict stance in recent years regarding public criticism of officials, especially comments that imply bias or question a referee’s integrity. Similar incidents involving high-profile players have previously resulted in charges, fines, and suspensions.
With Tottenham currently battling near the relegation zone, supporters have become increasingly frustrated with several controversial officiating decisions this season, adding further tension to the situation surrounding Maddison’s post.
