Tottenham’s hierarchy can take little credit for the appointment of Roberto De Zerbi despite Spurs’ recent improvement in the Premier League.
That’s the view of former Everton CEO Keith Wyness, who described Tottenham’s season as a “comedy” while praising De Zerbi for steadying the club during a difficult period.
Spurs are now unbeaten in their last three league matches, with a crucial 2-1 victory over Aston Villa moving them out of the relegation zone. With only three games remaining, Tottenham sit one point above 18th-placed West Ham and hold a superior goal difference.
De Zerbi arrived in north London at the end of March after the failed interim spell of Igor Tudor, inheriting a squad struggling near the bottom of the table.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness insisted the club’s executives should not celebrate survival just yet.
“Spurs are breathing a sigh of relief every 10 minutes they go without conceding,” he said.
“The executives can’t claim much credit for how this season has unfolded or how things have been managed. Tottenham are still not safe, and one result can completely change the situation.”
However, Wyness praised De Zerbi for lifting a squad severely impacted by injuries.
“He deserves credit for rallying a threadbare squad and making them competitive again. The injury problems have been unbelievable, but he’s managed to get the players fighting.”
Meanwhile, former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson warned that relegation could force Tottenham’s owners to inject around £100million into the club due to a projected £200m drop in revenue.
Despite that, Borson believes Spurs would still be strong favourites to bounce straight back to the Premier League, even if several key players leave this summer.
