Roberto De Zerbi invites 18-year-old to train with Tottenham first-team to ease injury crisis

Tottenham Hotspur have received an encouraging update on youngster Mason Melia as the club continues to battle its way out of the relegation zone.

Melia joined Spurs from St Patrick’s Athletic in February 2025 for an initial £1.6m plus add-ons, officially linking up with the club after turning 18 during the January window. His start in north London was slowed by injury setbacks, first a back issue and then a chest infection, which delayed his integration.

The forward has since returned to action, making his debut for the Spurs U21 side earlier this month and marking it in style by scoring just three minutes after coming on. He has now featured in four matches at U21 level, starting three of them.

According to Football.London, Melia has now been called up to first-team training by Roberto De Zerbi, as Tottenham deal with a growing injury crisis in attack. The club recently lost Dominic Solanke and Xavi Simons to injuries during their 1-0 win over Wolves, further depleting their forward options ahead of Sunday’s trip to Villa Park.

Despite being only 18, Melia already brings significant senior experience with him, having played 98 matches for St Patrick’s Athletic, scoring 25 goals and providing eight assists.

Meanwhile, Spurs cannot currently rely on Luca Williams-Barnett, who has been in strong form at youth level, as he is still recovering from injury, according to PA Sports’ George Sessions. There is also speculation that De Zerbi could look at academy winger Tynan Thompson, who has impressed in the UEFA Youth League with seven goals in seven appearances.
