Tottenham ‘actively’ pursuing ‘world class’ star in shock January swoop

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a very active January transfer window, and early reports suggest the club are lining up some bold, unexpected moves that could reshape the squad.

For the first time in years, Spurs will approach a window without Daniel Levy at the centre of negotiations. Whether fairly or not, Levy had long been the figure associated with tight control over spending, often frustrating supporters who believed major opportunities had been missed by holding back rather than pushing forward.

Now, with Fabio Paratici, Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham steering the process, there is a sense that Tottenham may finally adopt a much more aggressive and ambitious approach.

A new report has offered a clear view of what Spurs are targeting, and the most surprising development is the club’s search for what has been described as a “world class” goalkeeper. That pursuit comes despite the strong progress made by Guglielmo Vicario, who has proved to be one of the smartest signings the club has made in years, and the arrival of Antonin Kinsky last season to provide reliable depth.

Even with those two in place, the recruitment team are said to be exploring the possibility of bringing in a top-tier keeper capable of raising the standard even further. Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez was mentioned only as an example of the kind of profile Tottenham might consider, rather than a target they are currently in talks for.

The search does not end in goal. Another major priority is the striker position, although the club are being very clear that they will not sign a forward just for numbers. If Spurs make a move, it must be for someone who genuinely improves what they already have.

That approach rules out short-term panic buys and makes their shortlist far more interesting. A number of big names have already been linked, and while Ivan Toney is a player the club admire, the situation around him remains complicated. Reports suggest the striker is willing to take a huge pay cut to return to the Premier League in January as he aims to secure his place in England’s World Cup squad.

His relationship with Thomas Frank, who helped elevate Toney during their time together at Brentford, has fuelled strong talk of a reunion. But at 29 and on enormous wages in Saudi Arabia, the total cost of bringing him back might outweigh the benefits, especially for a Tottenham side that prefers younger players with long-term upside.

This is where Dusan Vlahović enters the picture. The Serbian striker, still just 25, is entering the final months of his contract at Juventus. Despite the club recently changing managers, the general expectation is that he will leave at some point in 2026.

Luciano Spalletti has made it clear he wants Vlahović to stay and sign a new deal, but the financial reality makes that difficult. The forward earns around £10 million a year after tax, and leaving on a free transfer in the summer would give him incredible bargaining power.

For Spurs, that opens a fascinating opportunity. If they can meet the wage demands, Vlahović suddenly becomes a much more realistic option than Toney. His age aligns perfectly with Tottenham’s long-term vision and, unlike other forwards in their range, he has already proved himself at the highest level.

The presence of Paratici only strengthens the possibility, given his history in Italian football and his familiarity with Vlahović’s career. That connection alone is enough to suggest Tottenham will at least explore this avenue seriously, if not immediately in January, then certainly in the summer.

Meanwhile, Spurs continue to be linked with a number of wide forwards. Liverpool are pushing ahead in their pursuit of Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, and Fabrizio Romano has outlined why the Reds may have an advantage.

But for Tottenham, that race may no longer be the priority, as reports claim they are already preparing an attempt to bring in Takefusa Kubo from Real Sociedad. The Japanese international has exploded into one of La Liga’s most exciting players and fits perfectly into the club’s current recruitment profile.

There are also developments involving former academy products. Troy Parrott, once seen as one of Tottenham’s brightest young attackers, is now attracting interest from giants like Bayern Munich and Juventus after finally beginning to deliver on his early promise.

Tottenham, however, seem intent on ensuring they do not repeat past mistakes with young talents, and they are keeping a close eye on his future to avoid losing another gifted prospect too soon.

As January approaches, one thing is clear: this is not the cautious Tottenham of old. The club’s recruitment team are exploring high-level targets in every key position, and the ambition on display signals that big changes may be on the horizon.
