Tottenham could miss out on multi million payday as ludicrous PFA decision on cards
It looks like Tottenham will not get the £3 million payout after all. The Daily Mail reports that the PFA is expected to say no to the post-season game in Australia.
The newspaper said on its website on March 25 that the players’ official board would be the next group to speak out against the “ludicrous” move, after Gareth Southgate did so.
A friendly match between Tottenham and Newcastle was set up in Australia between the end of the Premier League season and the start of foreign events. This caused a lot of controversy.
There was a lot of debate because the game was only three days after the last round of Premier League games and before both the European Championships and the Copa America. It would have been very hard on the players who had to travel.
How much would Tottenham like to get from the match in the post-season?
The friendly will take place at the MCG in Melbourne, which has room for up to 100,000 fans. Since Tottenham said that each ticket would cost £30, the game could bring in up to £3 million for the club, which is a very good deal.
It’s possible that the £3 million fee could go up even more if people bought food, drinks, and goods at the stadium during the game. These kinds of big events usually make money from ticket sales.
According to a story from The Athletic after the COVID-19 pandemic, Manchester United lost a lot of money because they missed a pre-season tour in India. The tour was a big reason why they lost almost £50 million in marketing income.
It was also said that teams, mostly in the MLS but also elsewhere, would pay up to £2 million to play a friendly match against a top club.
The match between Tottenham and Newcastle might not bring in as much money as a whole pre-season tour, and neither team would have to pay for it, but it is easy to see how these kinds of games and deals can help clubs make money.
Top teams often make a lot of money from their global names. For Spurs, the chance to grow their brand Down Under with a game billed as Postecoglou’s return would be a great way to do that.
