5 things we learned from Tottenham’s 3-1 win against Crystal Palace

Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur team came from behind to defeat Crystal Palace 3-1 in this afternoon’s Premier League match, bouncing back in spectacular fashion.

The match taught us five things, so let’s review them:

A goal like that was crucial for Timo Werner

The pressure would have really begun to build on Timo Werner if he had finished the day goalless again after missing a handful of good opportunities earlier. Brennan Johnson’s outstanding performance on the right side of the field presented him with a golden chance that he couldn’t pass up.

With Richarlison out with an injury, Werner will likely get more playing time, so here’s hoping this goal is the beginning of a good streak for him.

Everything changed when Brennan Johnson entered the picture

With around 30 minutes remaining, Tottenham substituted Johnson on, and he ended up being one of the team’s top players. He had more than atoned for his first-touch error when he snatched the ball from Joachim Andersen, dribbled into the penalty area, and set up Werner for the equaliser.

His relentless pressure not only set up Son’s goal, but also demonstrated Johnson’s eagerness and determination to succeed with some spectacular dribbling, pushing, and scrapping for the ball.

Incredibly brilliant James Maddison

Yes, we were theoretically aware of this before today, but James Maddison shown once again that he can work magic when we really need it. He seemed to be making an appearance at every turn today, and he was relentless in his pursuit of trouble for the Palace with his cunning and speed.

He was absolutely sensational in setting up Romero’s goal. The ability to see the pass is an accomplishment in and of itself, but to execute it with such a magnificent lob is nothing short of brilliance. He is a blessing to us.

Spurs must seize their opportunities without delay

Even though Tottenham won the crucial match, they certainly didn’t help themselves. The Lilywhites saved face by overcoming a deficit, although they had plenty of opportunities to take the lead in the first half.

Unfortunately, the Spurs are letting too many golden chances slip through their fingers and aren’t playing to their previous level of dominance. It’s great that we’re generating opportunities, but if we want to be a serious league contender, we need to be more clinical.

Final four teams within reach

Regardless, Spurs are having a terrific day, and they are re-igniting the prospect of finishing in the top four or higher. It won’t be easy after last week’s loss to Wolves, but a loss tonight would have effectively eliminated any chance of catching Aston Villa.

Everything is still up in the air, as Spurs face Villa in their next match. A victory like this might provide the boost we need to secure a berth in the Champions League.
