Wayne Rooney claims Spurs signing has been worse than Gyokeres

Wayne Rooney has shared his thoughts on the biggest summer signings made by Premier League clubs, but one Tottenham arrival didn’t impress him as much as fans might have expected.

During an interview with Amazon Prime Video, the former Manchester United star rated several high-profile newcomers, and his verdict has sparked plenty of discussion among supporters.

Tottenham made several key additions during the summer transfer window, with Mohamed Kudus and Joao Palhinha among the standout arrivals. Both players were brought in to add depth, energy, and creativity to Thomas Frank’s growing squad.

Kudus, who joined after an impressive spell abroad, has already shown glimpses of the skill and flair that made him one of Europe’s most exciting attacking prospects. Palhinha, on the other hand, has brought strength and composure to Tottenham’s midfield, offering balance and experience in crucial moments.

Although Spurs fans are still waiting to see the very best of their new signings, the early signs are encouraging. Kudus has adapted well to the pace and physicality of English football, while Palhinha’s presence in midfield has been a steadying influence.

Both have looked capable of becoming long-term assets for Tottenham as Frank continues to rebuild the squad in his own image.

Across the league, other clubs have also made big-name signings, including Viktor Gyokeres at Arsenal, Joao Pedro at Chelsea, Alexander Isak at Liverpool, and Bryan Mbeumo at Manchester United.

These additions have all generated excitement, with several players already making an impact in their new teams.

When asked to rate these transfers, Rooney didn’t hold back in his assessments. He gave Alexander Isak a modest 2 out of 5, Woltemade a 3, Mbeumo a 4, Wirtz a 2, Gyokeres a 4, Tijjani Reijnders a 3, Joao Pedro a 3, and Kudus also received a 3 out of 5.

His ratings raised eyebrows among Spurs fans, particularly since he placed Gyokeres slightly above Kudus despite the Tottenham man’s promising start.

Rooney’s comments have sparked debate about which signing has been the most successful so far. Bryan Mbeumo, who joined Manchester United, has been one of the early standouts, scoring important goals against top opposition including Liverpool and Tottenham.

His performances have quickly made him a fan favourite at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s young forward Woltemade has settled into Premier League life impressively, helping to fill the void left by Isak and contributing vital goals for Eddie Howe’s side.

For Tottenham, Kudus has provided something the team has lacked in recent seasons unpredictability and flair in attack. His quick feet, confidence, and creativity have helped open up defences and given Spurs a more dynamic look in the final third.

While he is still adjusting to the demands of the league, there’s no doubt that he has the ability to become one of Tottenham’s key players moving forward.

As for Gyokeres, Rooney’s higher rating seems to reflect the striker’s growing influence at Arsenal. Despite not yet replicating his prolific form from Sporting, the Swedish forward has still found the net six times in 14 appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side.

His contributions go beyond goals his physical presence, intelligent movement, and link-up play have created opportunities for Arsenal’s wide players and attacking midfielders. While he may not yet be firing on all cylinders, his adaptation to the Premier League has been impressive.

When comparing the performances of these new signings, it’s clear that each has brought something different to their respective clubs. Mbeumo’s sharpness in front of goal, Woltemade’s adaptability, Kudus’s flair, and Gyokeres’s work rate all add different dimensions to their teams.

Judging them this early in the season might be premature, but Rooney’s ratings provide a snapshot of how these stars are currently viewed by those who know the game best.

Ultimately, it may take until the end of the season to see who truly stands out as the best summer signing. For now, though, Kudus remains a player of immense promise, one whose talent could see him rise far above the ratings he’s been given.

As Tottenham continue to build momentum under Thomas Frank, the Ghanaian’s performances will be key to determining just how far this new-look Spurs side can go.
