‘Go Above And Beyond’ – Tottenham told to scrap deal & sign marquee striker– Expert
Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has emphasized that Tottenham Hotspur should prioritize signing a marquee striker rather than pursuing Juventus star Federico Chiesa.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Wyness, who now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs, asserted that Spurs must go “above and beyond” to secure a top-tier striker before the transfer deadline.
Tottenham has been linked with a potential move for Federico Chiesa, the 26-year-old Italian international who has reportedly become surplus to requirements at Juventus.
Chiesa, who scored 10 goals last season, is out of contract in less than a year. While his credentials are impressive, Wyness believes Chiesa is not the ideal fit for Tottenham’s pressing needs.
Following the departure of club legend Harry Kane to Bayern Munich a year ago, Tottenham is in dire need of a new striker for the 2024-25 campaign. Kane’s absence left a significant void, and Wyness insists that an out-and-out, top-level striker is what Spurs require to stay competitive.
When asked if Chiesa would be the ideal signing for Postecoglou’s side, Wyness responded: “I don’t think so. Without a doubt, he’d be a good addition – but he’s not the level I think Spurs need to be after.
They need an out-and-out, top-level striker who has the image and the flair. Chiesa is obviously a quality player, but Spurs need to go above and beyond and bring a marquee striker in.”
Wyness also pointed out that if Tottenham brings in minority investment, the priority should be securing a marquee striker. “If they bring in minority investment, then that’s the area they should be focusing on for the future,” he added. This strategic investment would help Tottenham enhance their squad and maintain their competitive edge.
