Tottenham star undergoes surgery after picking up injury on international duty

Yves Bissouma’s road back to full fitness has hit another bump after the Tottenham midfielder confirmed he has undergone ankle surgery.

The Mali international took to Instagram to share the update with fans, posting a picture from his hospital bed with his left ankle in a cast. In his post, he wrote: “Everything went well.

I thank God for everything that happens to me. Everything happens for a reason. I’m simply following my destiny. Grateful to God for His protection.” His message, filled with faith and gratitude, reflects his determination to bounce back stronger after what has been a challenging spell in his career.

The injury occurred during Mali’s World Cup qualifier against Madagascar, just minutes after Bissouma entered the pitch. A heavy tackle saw him stretchered off, and further tests later revealed ligament damage in his ankle.

Tottenham’s medical team has since confirmed that surgery was necessary, and the midfielder is now set for several weeks on the sidelines.

The setback comes at a difficult time for Bissouma, who had already missed the start of the season with another issue that reportedly blocked a potential move to Turkish side Fenerbahçe over the summer.

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou will be frustrated to lose another midfielder, especially one with Bissouma’s energy and ball-winning ability.

Speaking before Spurs’ 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, assistant coach Thomas Frank explained that Bissouma had suffered a ligament injury during international duty.

“Biss unfortunately had a situation with the national team, I think everyone saw that,” Frank said. “He got a ligament injury to his ankle, and that’ll keep him out for weeks.”

It has been a difficult few months for the 29-year-old, whose contract is set to expire next summer. After a promising end to last season, where he regained his place in the team following candid talks with Postecoglou, Bissouma appeared ready to re-establish himself as a key figure in Tottenham’s midfield.

His performances helped Spurs secure Europa League qualification, and his calmness on the ball, combined with his ability to break up play, had made him a fan favourite again.

However, this season has been a frustrating one. Fitness issues have kept him on the fringes of the squad, and discipline concerns also arose when he was left out of the travelling team for the Super Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain due to lateness.

Despite these setbacks, Bissouma remains a player with plenty to offer. His work rate, technical ability, and passion for the game are well known, and Tottenham fans will be hoping his recovery goes smoothly so he can return before the end of the campaign.

The next few months will be crucial for Bissouma, both professionally and personally. With his contract situation unresolved, he faces the challenge of proving his worth once again in a highly competitive squad.

Should he recover well, there remains a strong chance that Tottenham could either offer him a new deal or cash in on him during the January transfer window to avoid losing him for free in 2026.

For now, though, Bissouma’s focus will be entirely on recovery. His message to fans shows a man at peace with his situation, trusting that every setback has a purpose. As he continues his rehabilitation, both Tottenham supporters and the Mali national team will be eagerly awaiting his return.

Given his resilience and determination, few would bet against him coming back stronger than ever, ready to fight for his place in the team once more and remind everyone why he remains one of the Premier League’s most dynamic midfielders.
