Arsenal, Tottenham ready to fight for classy €80m-rated Bundesliga playmaker also on City radar
According to reports, Arsenal and Tottenham are prepared to face up in January or the summer of 2019 in an attempt to sign a top-tier Bundesliga playmaker, but they will also have to deal with Manchester City.
Outstanding The man connected to the North London pair is Florian Wirtz, a midfielder for Bayer Leverkusen, however signing him anytime soon would cost a lot of money.
Having already contributed nine assists and five goals for Xabi Alonso’s team this season, the 20-year-old has made a name for himself as one of Germany’s top offensive players.
In fact, according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Wirtz’s performances this season are drawing interest from many teams looking to explore a high-profile trade.
The Gunners and Spurs are the main suitors, as Mikel Arteta and Ange Postecoglou want to improve their teams following strong season openers.
Given the kind of offensive midfielders both teams currently have in their ranks, one might argue that their desire is rather unexpected.
Martin Odegaard, the captain of Arsenal, uses Wirtz most effectively as a No. 10, but the German can also play in a wide position.
Therefore, his possible arrival may give Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, and Leandro Trossard more competition for the wide positions at The Emirates.
For Tottenham, James Maddison, a cheap summer acquisition, is presently wreaking havoc in his attacking midfield position behind Richarlison, Son Heung-min, and Dejan Kulusevski.
In addition, Spurs have a wide range of backup alternatives at the winger positions, including Manor Solomon and Brennan Johnson, the latter of whom will likely return from injury.
Prominent Club vying for Wirtz’s sigining
However, Mundo reports that City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich are all vying for the Leverkusen phenomenon, meaning that the north London teams are not the only ones interested in Wirtz.
Since Wirtz’s current deal with the Bundesliga team doesn’t expire until 2027, Leverkusen will have plenty opportunity to demand a premium fee to sign him. The article also states that the price tag is in the range of €80 and €100 million.
It’s unclear whether any team will be willing to pay that much in January, but if Wirtz maintains his incredible form under Liverpool icon Alonso, his price tag is unlikely to come down very soon.
