Woeful: Alan Brazil says two Tottenham players did absolutely nothing in the second-half of the game
Alan Brazil criticized two Tottenham Hotspur players for their lackluster performance in the second half against West Ham in yesterday’s match.
Despite initially leading, Tottenham ended up drawing 1-1, with the game being highly contested until the final whistle.
While the match saw both teams enjoying spells of control, Spurs had to settle for a point in the end. The recurring issue of conceding too many chances has plagued Tottenham for some time now, raising questions about defensive stability.
Although many expect manager Ange Postecoglou to address defensive issues in the upcoming transfer window, there may also be a need for stylistic adjustments within the team.
However, defensive shortcomings weren’t the primary concern for pundit Alan Brazil during the match.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Brazil expressed surprise at James Maddison’s substitution in the second half, as Maddison appeared unhappy with the decision.
Brazil believed that two other Tottenham players, Timo Werner and Brennan Johnson, should have been substituted instead.
Brazil characterized Werner and Johnson as ‘passengers’ in the second half, criticizing their inability to effectively beat the opposition’s full-backs, which he considers a fundamental task for wingers.
He remarked, “Second half I thought they were passengers, basically.” Despite their involvement in Spurs’ goal in the first half, Brazil felt they contributed little else in the second half.
This critique contrasts with the perception of some Tottenham fans who regarded Johnson as one of the team’s standout performers in the match.
While Werner’s performance declined after a promising start, Johnson remained a potential game-changer, reflecting his current importance to the team.
Given Son Heung-min’s subdued performance in the game, Postecoglou faces decisions regarding the team lineup for the upcoming match against Nottingham Forest.
