Tottenham are missing out on stadium revenue as club exec details active talks

While the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has undoubtedly been financially successful, a recent meeting of the fan advisory board showed the team is losing out on a potentially significant commercial contract.

Spurs’ financial situation has significantly improved since the club demolished the old White Hart Lane and replaced it with a brand-new, gleaming stadium.

Events unrelated to football, such boxing matches, music concerts, NFL partnerships, and expanded football stadiums, have all shown to be enormous money makers.

A comparison of the club’s financial performance over the last several years serves to illustrate this. For instance, the club’s 2017 annual financial report states that Premier League gate sales brought in £19 million. They generated £106.1 million from all matchday revenues, according to their most recent annual financial report from 2022, an increase of £87.1 million.

The team made £57.4 million in sponsorship income in 2017, and that amount increased to £126.1 million in 2022. They may make more money from advertising if there are more people watching the team and attending their magnificent stadium. They aren’t presently using this potential to its fullest, however.

Tottenham Executive Director Donna Maria-Cullen attended a fan advisory board meeting on Tuesday, December 12, and the club published the meeting minutes on their official website on December 19. A number of subjects were covered, but one in particular caught our attention.

A sky bridge that has stood tall and magnificent above the field since the stadium’s opening has not been used.

According to the official minutes, Maria-Cullen responded, “it would need to be linked to a commercial partnership – conversations around which are becoming more active due to the wide range of major events coming to the stadium – however, the Sky Bridge is not currently a priority,” when asked why there haven’t been any developments with the sky bridge since the stadium opened.

It seems like the club lost out on this chance. The sky bridge is ready for use; it has already been constructed. Any commercial agreements would undoubtedly benefit Spurs given the attention the stadium attracts, so the more of them they have, the better.

Because of this, it seems strange that Tottenham is not making the most of a chance that is clearly in front of them; yet, given that Maria-Cullen acknowledged that talks on the subject are “becoming more active,” this is definitely something to keep a watch on.
