Tottenham now at hedge to agree deal in signing intelligent £29M man in January
As the January transfer window approaches, Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly confident they can secure their top winter target for manager Ange Postecoglou.
After a summer of significant spending, including the acquisition of Dominic Solanke to fill the void left by Harry Kane, Spurs are looking to further strengthen their squad.
Despite bringing in promising talents like Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, results have been disappointing for the North London side, with a frustrating start to the season, including a 1-0 loss to Arsenal.
In a more positive turn, Brennan Johnson’s late goal saved Tottenham from a shocking exit in the Carabao Cup against Coventry City.
Yet, this mixed form has raised questions about whether chairman Daniel Levy should support Postecoglou with additional reinforcements.
It now seems that Spurs are eyeing the January transfer window as an opportunity to bolster their ranks, with Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra identified as their priority signing.
Reports from Spain suggest that Tottenham is increasingly confident about reaching an agreement to bring Guerra to North London in the winter.
However, negotiations are expected to be drawn out, as Spurs are hesitant to meet Valencia’s asking price of €35 million (£29 million).
Guerra, just 21 years old, has been a standout player in an otherwise struggling Valencia team that currently sits at the bottom of La Liga.
Despite his team’s poor performance, Guerra has caught the attention of scouts, and Tottenham sees him as a potential long-term solution for their midfield.
The addition of Guerra would provide Tottenham with a young, intelligent midfielder who could form a dynamic partnership with Archie Gray.
Although Gray has often been deployed in a full-back role at his previous club Leeds United, his natural position is in midfield, and pairing him with Guerra could give Spurs a formidable central duo for years to come.
While Tottenham’s current form is concerning, their efforts to build a squad for the future deserve recognition, and Guerra’s arrival would further underline their commitment to this long-term vision.
Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig has described Guerra as an “intelligent” player, which aligns well with Postecoglou’s tactical approach.
His presence could provide the spark Tottenham needs in the second half of the season. Given Valencia’s precarious position at the bottom of La Liga, there’s a chance that the Spanish club’s desperation to raise funds could lead to a reduced transfer fee for Spurs.
How their survival battle unfolds over the next few months will undoubtedly impact the transfer negotiations, as Tottenham looks to secure a potentially cheaper deal.
However, the outcome of these negotiations remains uncertain. Spurs are likely to present a formal offer as the January window nears, but whether they can persuade Valencia to lower their demands or find an alternative solution remains to be seen.
If Guerra does join Tottenham, it would represent a significant investment in the future of the club’s midfield and give Postecoglou another young talent to mold into a key player for the team.
While the current season may not have started as well as Spurs fans had hoped, the potential signing of Guerra in January could provide a much-needed boost. His intelligence, skill, and youthful energy could help turn the tide for Tottenham as they aim to climb the Premier League table and challenge for silverware.
