Tottenham legend hits back at Lineker after he slammed spurs player performance in England 1-1 Denmark
Harry Kane has directly responded to Gary Lineker’s critical remarks following England’s 1-1 draw against Denmark at Euro 2024.
Despite scoring England’s only goal, Kane struggled to maintain an impact, leading to his substitution in the 70th minute.
During the BBC’s post-match coverage, Lineker, a former England striker himself, stated that Kane “had to do a lot better,” describing his performance as lethargic.
Lineker’s comments suggested that Kane’s movement was minimal and that he did not challenge Denmark’s defense effectively. This critique did not sit well with Kane, who addressed the issue in a recent press conference.
Ahead of England’s final group game against Slovenia, Kane made it clear that he always gives his all for the national team, regardless of the minutes he plays.
He emphasized the responsibility pundits have, particularly those who have previously played for England, in shaping the mentality of younger players.
Kane stated, “I’ll give everything I have for however long I play. Whether it’s 70 minutes, 90 minutes, extra-time. I’ve done that my whole career. I’d never want to be disrespectful to any player, especially a player that’s worn the shirt and knows what it’s like to play for England.”
He added, “What maybe ex-players, ex-players who are pundits now have got to realise, it’s very hard not to listen to it now, especially for young players who are not used to it or some players are new to the environment.
I always feel like they have a responsibility, I know they’ve got to be honest and have their opinion but they have a responsibility as an ex-England player that a lot of players looked up to, people do care about what they say and do listen to them.”
Kane continued, highlighting the importance of positive reinforcement from former players turned pundits. He urged these influential voices to remember their own experiences wearing the England shirt and how their words can impact current players striving for success.
“People do care about what they say and do listen to them. Like I touched on, everyone has their opinion, and the bottom line is we haven’t won anything as a nation for a long, long time and a lot of these players were part of that as well and they know how tough it is.
It’s not digging anyone out but it’s just the reality that they do know that it’s tough to play in these major tournaments and tough to play for England.”
“I’d never disrespect any ex-player but all I’d say is just remember what it was like to wear the shirt and that their words are listened to. Some of the lads, I don’t know how many of the lads, you do hear it and we all want to win a major tournament.”
Kane concluded by expressing his hope that former players would support the team positively, boosting their confidence rather than critiquing them harshly.
Lineker’s comments also brought Kane’s fitness into question. Having played only one full 90-minute game since May 4th, concerns about his match readiness have been prevalent. Lineker urged England manager Gareth Southgate to demand more from Kane, particularly in terms of movement and pressing.
“I think Harry Kane needs to do a lot better. His movement was minimal. He didn’t look to go behind and he doesn’t often.
Even when he’s dropping short, he’s doing so very lethargically. When you’re a striker, your two jobs are to score goals, which he’s brilliant at. But, I think he needs his manager to say I need a little bit more from you, Harry.”
As England prepares to face Slovenia, Kane’s determination to lead by example remains unwavering. His goal against Denmark, despite being his only touch inside the penalty area, showcased his scoring ability. However, the challenge lies in maintaining his influence throughout the game and proving critics like Lineker wrong.
Kane’s response highlights the delicate balance between constructive criticism and support, especially from those who have previously represented the national team.
As the tournament progresses, the pressure on Kane and his teammates will undoubtedly increase, but so will their opportunity to shine and bring glory to England.
The debate sparked by Lineker’s comments and Kane’s subsequent response underscores the complexities of high-level football. As England navigates Euro 2024, the interplay between player performance, media critique, and fan support will be pivotal.
Kane’s leadership and ability to respond to criticism with resilience and determination will be crucial in England’s quest for success on the European stage.
