Man Utd to bite Tottenham hand off with stunning move for star defender as Ratcliffe makes waves
Tottenham Hotspur could face a significant challenge in retaining Micky van de Ven, as Manchester United reportedly eyes the star center-back, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s side among several top clubs vying for his signature.
Van de Ven has emerged as a key figure for Spurs since his arrival last summer. Last season, Tottenham endured defensive struggles, conceding 63 league goals and finishing eighth.
However, with Van de Ven featuring in every minute of the first 10 league games this term, Spurs found themselves atop the table, conceding less than a goal per game.
However, Van de Ven’s absence due to injury coincided with a downturn for Spurs, who suffered defeats in three consecutive matches against Chelsea, Wolves, and Aston Villa.
Upon his return in January, Spurs enjoyed an unbeaten run in four games and won four out of seven matches, highlighting his influence on the team’s fortunes.
The Dutch defender’s impressive performances have not gone unnoticed, with Manchester United reportedly expressing keen interest in acquiring his services.
It’s suggested that Van de Ven has caught the attention of several top European clubs, including United, who would eagerly pursue him if the opportunity arose.
However, any potential move would hinge on various factors, including United’s need to offload players before making significant acquisitions.
Considering Van de Ven’s initial price tag of £43 million and his improved performances in the Premier League, acquiring him would likely come at a premium.
Moreover, Tottenham selling to a direct rival, a scenario they resisted with Harry Kane last summer, and Daniel Levy’s reputation for driving hard bargains could further complicate negotiations, potentially resulting in a hefty transfer fee.
Despite United’s interest, Van de Ven may opt to remain at Tottenham for the time being, especially considering Spurs’ current position in the league standings.
With Tottenham currently fifth, just ahead of United in sixth, staying in North London could be the wisest decision for the defender.
Nevertheless, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ambitious plans for United and the allure of joining a project aiming to reclaim the club’s former glory could sway Van de Ven’s decision.
With additional quality signings, United could bolster their squad and mount a challenge to leapfrog Tottenham in the standings.
