Tottenham star Micky van de Ven faces fight for future, with Spurs eyeing replacements

Tottenham Hotspur is already preparing for the January transfer window following Micky van de Ven’s recent hamstring injury sustained against Manchester City.

The Dutch defender, who was forced off the field just 14 minutes into the match, was replaced by Destiny Udogie, but his injury has intensified Tottenham’s need for defensive reinforcements.

Van de Ven has faced an injury-prone start to his tenure at Spurs, having previously missed two months last season with a similar issue. At only 23, there’s concern surrounding his physical durability, and Spurs are expected to explore new options during the winter window to mitigate these fitness worries.

Mike Brown, a former scout for Tottenham, has commented on the club’s defensive vulnerability, stating that depth in defense is currently a major issue.

Brown notes that the club’s first-choice center-back pairing of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven is solid, but once injuries arise, the options become limited.

According to Brown, Spurs’ defensive depth, or lack thereof, poses a problem for rotation, impacting Tottenham’s ability to maintain consistency and quality at the back. He suggests that bringing in another defender would provide stability and allow for tactical flexibility, particularly in case of further injury setbacks.

Cristian Romero, who has also dealt with his own injury challenges in the past season, shares this vulnerability, and both he and Van de Ven could benefit from additional support in defense.

While Spurs did bolster their defense by bringing in Radu Dragusin last season, his performance has yet to provide a complete answer to Tottenham’s defensive needs.

The club is reportedly weighing other options, including players with higher pedigrees, such as Joe Gomez from Liverpool. A more experienced defender could bring both stability and leadership to the back line, an area that has been exposed in critical games.

In addition to this, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has acknowledged the physical demands placed on Van de Ven. He recently deployed Van de Ven at left-back for the final 30 minutes in a win over Burnley, recognizing the need to balance his minutes carefully.

Postecoglou expressed caution about Van de Ven’s fitness, particularly given the different physical demands associated with playing left-back in Spurs’ system.

This tactical adjustment highlights Postecoglou’s efforts to extend the defender’s availability, though it also underscores the ongoing need for a more durable roster of defensive players.

The January transfer window presents an opportunity for Tottenham to address these gaps and strengthen their back line, enabling Postecoglou to rotate effectively without sacrificing quality or stability.
