Tottenham fury as Son Heung-min claim brutally shut down by Chelsea star

Former Chelsea and Aston Villa midfielder Andy Townsend has weighed in on the status of Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min, asserting that he does not consider the South Korean to be a Premier League legend.

Son’s tenure at Tottenham began in August 2015 following his transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. Since then, the versatile left winger, capable of operating as a centre-forward as well, has carved out an impressive career in North London.

With 399 appearances for Tottenham, Son has amassed a tally of 160 goals and 82 assists. This season alone, he has contributed 15 goals and eight assists in 26 league matches, emerging as Tottenham’s leading goal scorer.

Despite his prolific output, Son currently ranks fifth among Tottenham’s all-time leading goal scorers, trailing behind Martin Chivers, Bobby Smith, Sir Jimmy Greaves, and Harry Kane.

However, Son’s illustrious career at Spurs has been marred by the club’s failure to secure any silverware since 2008, a fact that has hindered both his and Kane’s legacy.

While Son and Kane are revered as modern-day icons at Tottenham, their trophy drought has cast a shadow over their standing among the elite players in the world, and in the annals of football history.

Townsend, a two-time League Cup winner with Aston Villa and former Chelsea player with 124 appearances, opines that Son does not warrant the title of ‘legend’ in the Premier League.

In response to whether adding more trophies to his resume would bolster Son’s legacy, Townsend quipped, “He is a top player, he’s a great; that word ‘legend’ should only be used in the right context.”

Addressing the debate on talkSPORT, Townsend humorously remarked, “Someone put that on your script about me earlier and it’s not right. I think that Son has been a great player and great operator for Spurs, but a legend? No.”

As Son strives to silence critics like Townsend and secure silverware for Tottenham under Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, the quest for a trophy continues into the next season, with aspirations to end the club’s prolonged trophy drought.
