Tottenham Expert shares Cristian Romero exit verdict after £60M transfer reveal

John Wenham suggests that Tottenham would only consider pursuing Everton center-back Jarrad Branthwaite if Cristian Romero were to depart the club.

As the host of the respected Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, Wenham posits that Tottenham would need to create space in their squad before bringing in another central defender.

This speculation follows reports linking Tottenham with a potential move for Branthwaite, with Everton reportedly seeking a fee exceeding £60 million for the 21-year-old.

In an exclusive conversation with Tottenham News, Wenham expresses skepticism about the feasibility of a high-priced acquisition like Branthwaite, given the existing options in central defense under Ange Postecoglou.

Wenham explains, “For a sum in the vicinity of £60 million, it’s difficult to envision us investing that magnitude of funds when we already possess three established center-backs within the squad.

We’ve made substantial investments in each of them, and they are all experienced internationals capable of making significant contributions to Tottenham.”

He continues, “Consequently, I view the prospect of signing Branthwaite as unrealistic from Tottenham’s perspective.

However, if someone like Romero were to depart the club, then perhaps a move for Branthwaite could be feasible. Yet, I don’t foresee Romero leaving anytime soon.”

Despite Branthwaite’s impressive performances for Everton this season, particularly in aiding their bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League, Wenham contends that the young Englishman may not offer a significant improvement over Romero or Micky van de Ven.

Given the substantial financial outlay required to secure Branthwaite’s services, Wenham suggests that Tottenham’s priorities lie elsewhere, particularly in making a statement signing in attacking positions if significant funds are to be expended.
