Tottenham open talks with “extraordinary” Euro 2024 player and could hijack major club

Tottenham Hotspur has initiated discussions with the representatives of a Euro 2024 standout, potentially disrupting a major European club’s plans to sign him. Spurs are actively seeking to enhance their defensive lineup under manager Ange Postecoglou.

In January, Tottenham secured the signing of Romanian international Radu Drăgușin for approximately £25 million. Despite this acquisition, manager Ange Postecoglou is still on the lookout for additional center-backs to solidify his squad.

The partnership between Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero was formidable throughout the 2023/2024 season, playing a pivotal role in Tottenham’s defense. Van de Ven’s exceptional pace complemented Postecoglou’s high defensive line strategy.

Speaking in March, Postecoglou acknowledged the necessity of strengthening the center-back position.

He stated, “If you’re saying, ‘Is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at. It’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else. When I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven center-backs at the club. It’s not just about numbers; it’s about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit into what we’re trying to build here.”

Tottenham has expressed strong interest in Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, identified as a prime target to bolster their defense.

According to DAZN (via Il Bianconero), Tottenham has initiated contact with Calafiori’s representatives and Bologna, aiming to outmaneuver Juventus in securing his signature.

Calafiori, who has been lauded for his performance in Euro 2024, particularly in Italy’s opening group game against Albania, commands a substantial price tag of £42 million.

His impressive showing in Serie A has caught the attention of top European clubs, setting the stage for a competitive transfer battle.

Italian World Cup winner Gianluca Zambrotta praised Calafiori’s performance against Albania, stating, “He played an extraordinary game, like the whole team in the first 60 minutes.

He played with personality, without fear. Perhaps the only flaw was on the long ball where we took a risk with Donnarumma’s exit. But he showed some beautiful things yesterday.”

Such endorsements underscore Calafiori’s potential and the value he could bring to Tottenham’s defense.

Tottenham’s proactive approach in the transfer market aligns with Postecoglou’s broader strategy of enhancing all areas of the squad.
