Tottenham attempt to hijack Barcelona’s Lucas Bergvall deal
Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly making a move to disrupt Barcelona’s potential acquisition of Swedish prospect Lucas Bergvall from Djurgardens IF.
At just 17 years old, Bergvall has garnered widespread recognition as one of Scandinavia’s most promising young talents, making a notable impact early in his senior career.
Despite Barcelona initially seeming to lead the race for his signature, Spurs, among other top European clubs, have expressed interest in the talented midfielder.
Djurgardens sporting director Bo Andersson confirmed last month that initial discussions had taken place with Barcelona regarding a possible transfer for Bergvall.
Fabrizio Romano reported that Djurgardens is likely to accept Barcelona’s offer of €7 million (£6 million) plus €3 million (£2.6 million) in add-ons, as Bergvall has indicated a desire to move to Camp Nou this summer.
However, the Daily Mail reveals that Tottenham has entered the fray, submitting an inquiry and challenging Barcelona for the young talent.
While Barcelona appeared to be on the verge of securing Bergvall’s services, Tottenham’s interest adds a new dimension to the player’s potential destination.
A host of other European clubs, including Manchester United, Newcastle United, Inter Milan, Atalanta BC, Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, RB Leipzig, and Rennes, are also closely monitoring Bergvall’s situation. The midfielder is under contract with Djurgardens until December 2025.
Bergvall’s journey began with Brommapojkarna, where he made 12 first-team appearances, including his debut at just 16 years old, before making the move to Djurgardens in December of last year.
Displaying his technical prowess as a box-to-box midfielder, he accumulated 28 appearances last season, contributing to Djurgardens’ fourth-place finish in the Allsvenskan table.
Although the team narrowly missed out on European qualification, Bergvall’s exceptional performances earned him his first senior international cap for Sweden in a friendly win over Estonia on January 12.
Tottenham’s pursuit of Bergvall aligns with the uncertainty surrounding the long-term future of midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Despite reported interest from clubs such as Lyon and Juventus, Hojbjerg’s lawyer has affirmed that the 28-year-old will stay with Spurs for the remainder of the season.
