Tottenham ready to get rid of another brilliant player on a free transfer – David Ornstein

Tottenham Hotspur appears inclined to allow Eric Dier to depart from the club on a free transfer in the ongoing January window, as indicated by David Ornstein, a journalist with The Athletic, sharing insights on Tottenham’s plans for this transfer period.

The initial days of the window witnessed Hugo Lloris’ departure, making a move to Los Angeles FC over the weekend. The 37-year-old goalkeeper was permitted to leave on a free transfer due to his contract having just six months remaining. Eric Dier finds himself in a similar contractual situation at Spurs.

Struggling to secure playing minutes this season, Dier has faced limited opportunities, with Ange Postecoglou favoring other options like Emerson Royal over the Englishman.

Limited to only four appearances this term, reports have already surfaced suggesting Postecoglou’s willingness to offload the defender.

David Ornstein, shedding light on Spurs’ plans, mentioned on Rio Ferdinand’s FIVE that the club aims to offload players in the forthcoming weeks.

He further highlighted the possibility of Tottenham allowing Dier to leave without any transfer fee, similar to Lloris’s departure to the MLS, which aids in reducing the wage bill, crucial in the Financial Fair Play context.

Ornstein stated, “They would like players to go. Hugo Lloris has already gone to LAFC. That doesn’t bring in a transfer fee but it moves his salary off the wage bill, which is crucial in this Financial Fair Play era. They would very gladly do the same with Eric Dier, who’s out of contract next summer and is not part of the plans.”

While previously a pivotal player under the management of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho, Dier’s prominence has diminished this season, seeing a decline in favor with Postecoglou leaning towards utilizing full-backs in central defense instead of the English defender.

His infrequent starts, especially during periods of unavailability of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, reflect the reduced role he currently holds in the team.
