Media feel 18yr old Tottenham ace with brilliant performance has played way too many minutes on loan this season
There are growing concerns that one of Tottenham Hotspur’s young talents has been overexposed during his loan spell away from the club this season.
Ange Postecoglou and Daniel Levy’s strategy aimed to provide more playing opportunities for the club’s youngsters in senior football this season.
Among those who departed on loan in January were Alejo Veliz, Ashley Phillips, and Alfie Devine, all seeking to enhance their chances of breaking into the first team next season.
While Veliz has struggled for game time at Sevilla in La Liga, both Phillips and Devine have received opportunities in the Championship.
These young prospects are viewed as integral to the club’s future, with Postecoglou likely to reassess their progress during pre-season.
Despite Devine experiencing a challenging outing for Plymouth Argyle, culminating in a late red card, it is Phillips who has garnered more attention from the local media.
Plymouth finds themselves embroiled in a relegation battle in the Championship, just one point above the drop zone.
In analyzing Phillips’ playing time during the recent loss to Bristol City, Plymouth Live raised concerns about potential overexposure.
Having played 14 matches since joining as Ian Foster’s first signing in January, the 18-year-old has been thrust into the fray.
Phillips received a six out of 10 rating for his performance, with Plymouth Live noting, “The 18-year-old has given it his best since arriving on loan from Tottenham Hotspur as Ian Foster’s first signing in January. But it has asked a lot of someone of his age to play so many highly competitive matches in a relatively short period of time.”
While Phillips cannot be faulted for recent defeats or Foster’s dismissal, some believe he has been burdened with too much responsibility.
From Tottenham’s perspective, the loan spell provides invaluable experience for the youngster, regardless of Plymouth’s season outcome.
Phillips is expected to return with increased resilience, aiming to alter Postecoglou’s stance on recruiting another center-back.
