Timo Werner could be granted his Tottenham wish by Postecoglou

Timo Werner could be in line for another start as Tottenham face Ferencvaros in their upcoming Europa League fixture. After being included in the starting XI for Spurs’ impressive 3-0 win over Manchester United, Werner will be hoping for more opportunities to prove himself under Ange Postecoglou.

The match at Old Trafford was a significant moment for Tottenham, and Werner contributed to the victory with a solid performance, filling in for Son Heung-min on the left wing.

Despite a couple of missed chances, Werner’s involvement in the game highlighted why Postecoglou opted to include him in the starting lineup.

His pace and ability to maintain the team’s shape on the left allowed Spurs to continue utilizing two quick wingers, without disrupting the recent success of Dejan Kulusevski in his current position.

Werner linked up well with Destiny Udogie and other teammates, showing flashes of the quality that Tottenham hoped he would bring to the team.

However, it was Werner’s missed opportunities in front of goal that left fans frustrated. On more than one occasion, he got into promising positions only to squander the final action.

One of the most notable moments came late in the match when Werner managed to outpace his defender down the left, only to deliver a misdirected pass behind his teammates, including a wide-open Dominic Solanke on the edge of the box. While the build-up play was excellent, it was the final decision that ultimately let him down.

Werner’s first shot on goal also provided insight into his current struggles. With too much time to think, he hesitated, and that lack of sharpness or confidence may have contributed to his failure to score.

Known for his prolific goal-scoring record in Germany, where he netted 113 goals in 213 appearances for RB Leipzig, Werner has found it much harder to replicate that form in the Premier League.

Unfortunately, the narrative around his time in England has often focused more on his high-profile misses than his contributions on the pitch.

What cannot be ignored, though, is Werner’s work rate and energy. These qualities are sometimes overlooked, but they remain a crucial part of his game. After joining Tottenham on loan from RB Leipzig in January, he made an immediate impact with two goals and three assists in 14 appearances.

His versatility and experience have made him a valuable squad member, providing cover for Son and adding depth to a demanding schedule this season. Postecoglou’s decision to bring him back for the 2024/25 campaign was driven by Werner’s attributes that align with the coach’s philosophy for wide players.

So far, Werner has made six appearances this season, with most of them coming off the bench late in games.

The limited time on the pitch—typically 10-15 minutes—has made it difficult for the 28-year-old to find rhythm and make a significant impact.

His only other start this season came in the Carabao Cup against Coventry City, where he struggled to make an impression.

However, his performance against Manchester United, despite the missed chances, should serve as a confidence booster heading into the Ferencvaros match.

With another start likely on Thursday, Werner has the perfect opportunity to rebuild his confidence. Ferencvaros, one of the weaker sides in the competition, could provide the perfect stage for the German to get back on the scoresheet.

Whether he scores a stunning long-range effort or taps in from close range, a goal could be transformative for Werner at this stage of his Tottenham career.

Postecoglou, known for getting the best out of his players, will undoubtedly be keen to see Werner regain the form that made him one of Europe’s most feared attackers.

The upcoming Europa League game could be a pivotal moment in Werner’s season, offering him the chance to shake off his recent struggles and rediscover his goal-scoring touch.

As the season progresses, Werner will continue to play an important role for Tottenham, and the manager will be eager to unlock his full potential, starting with the match against Ferencvaros.
