Cost £22m, now worth 8x less than Kulusevski: Spurs must finally axe £40k-p/w Nuno dud

Similar to Tottenham Hotspur, Ange Postecoglou led the team to Europa League qualifying in his first season, but he will require top-notch signings to help them advance.

Though, naturally, the Lilywhites need to make some sales as well, notably in the instance of one attacker who joined the team under previous manager Nuno Espírito Santo and is now worth eight times less than Dejan Kulusevski, it’s the incomings that often make the news.

Career of Tottenham Hotspur player Bryan Gil

Bryan Gil, a Spanish winger, signed with Spurs in July 2021 for a fee of £22 million from Sevilla.

Since the then-20-year-old had already earned a few senior Spain caps and was selected for the Tokyo Olympics, there was some excitement around him at the time, but it would be hard to characterize his transfer as a success in the three years that have passed.

The Barbate-born winger made 20 first-team appearances his first season after joining, but he only scored once and contributed one assist. He was then loaned out to Valencia in La Liga for six months, but he only managed to return one assist in 17 games.

Not much improved during his second Spurs season; in 11 games, he recorded only one assist. He then returned to Spain for a second six-month loan, this time with Sevilla. He played really well there, helping the team win the Europa League final and scoring twice and dishing out three assists in 24 games.

But this season has been his worst to date, with injuries and Postecoglou not thinking highly of him resulting in only 12 starts and 233 minutes played, during which he was naturally unable to contribute to a single goal.

The 23-year-old has lost his position on the squad and any feeling of good momentum this season overall, and his current price is in line with that.

Bryan Gil value in 2024

Gil’s current value, according to the CIES Football Observatory, is only €10 million, or little less than £9 million, or almost £13 million less than Spurs’ 2021 purchase price.

It also means that, behind young players Mikey Moore and Yago Santiago, the former Sevilla ace is now only tied for fourth most valued winger at the team, behind Manor Solomon.

Worse yet, his new price is eight times less than Kulusevski’s €80 million appraisal, or around £68 million.

Even although the Swede’s return of 34 goal involvements in 96 games for the north Londoners is not as great as that of other wingers like Bukayo Saka or Cole Palmer, it makes sense that the CIES regard him so highly given his young age of 24.

In the end, the club should sell Gil even if keeping the former Juventus wideman on board should be their top goal moving forward since his £40,000 weekly salary is now unjustified.

If they can offload him this summer – as Fabrizio Romano has suggested they might – they may still be able to get a small fee, whereas another season like this one next year could make him practically impossible to sell.
