£164M+ jackpot: PL rewards Spurs with more cash than Villa despite losing top four race

In the 2023-24 Premier League season, Aston Villa finished above Tottenham Hotspur. Despite this achievement, Villa will earn less in Premier League prize money compared to Tottenham.

The battle for a top-four finish was decided before the season’s final day. Tottenham’s defeat to Manchester City last week relegated them to the Europa League for the 2024-25 season, while also dashing Arsenal’s title hopes.

Under the guidance of Unai Emery, Aston Villa entered the season with high hopes and have surpassed all expectations with their remarkable performance. Securing Champions League football for the next term promises significant financial rewards, yet Villa will receive slightly less Premier League prize money than 5th-placed Tottenham.

According to football finance analyst Chris Weatherspoon, Aston Villa will earn £161.8 million from the Premier League’s central funds.

In contrast, Tottenham Hotspur will receive £164.1 million, about £2.3 million more than Villa, despite finishing lower in the standings. Tottenham and Villa rank fourth and fifth in earnings this season, following Manchester City (£174.9 million), Arsenal (£174.7 million), and Liverpool (£170.3 million).

Premier League teams receive prize money from six different sources. Three of these—central commercial payments, domestic shares, and overseas shares—are equally distributed among all 20 Premier League clubs. These three components comprise approximately two-thirds of the total prize money. Consequently, Aston Villa and Tottenham receive the same amount from these sources.

The remaining prize money is distributed based on three merit-based factors: domestic TV money, overseas TV money, and a fixed fee per broadcast game. Aston Villa outperformed Tottenham in both merit-based categories due to their higher league finish. However, Tottenham earned more from broadcast fees, as their matches were televised more frequently.

Even though Villa’s Premier League prize money is slightly less than Tottenham’s, the club is set for a lucrative season in the Champions League next term. This marks Villa’s first return to Europe’s premier competition since the 1982-83 season. The club’s participation in the newly formatted Champions League will be financially rewarding.

Aston Villa is expected to earn at least £64 million from their Champions League campaign. This windfall will likely break the club’s own turnover record and set a new benchmark for clubs outside the Premier League’s traditional ‘Big Six.’

Aston Villa’s remarkable 2023-24 season under Unai Emery has set the stage for a financially rewarding future, particularly with their return to the Champions League.

Despite earning slightly less Premier League prize money than Tottenham Hotspur, Villa’s superior league position and Champions League qualification promise a bright financial outlook. The coming season will be crucial for Villa as they aim to build on their successes and continue to challenge the top clubs in English and European football.
