‘He said yes’: Player Spurs were reportedly favourites to sign has now agreed to join another club

Spurs’ chances of landing one of their main targets have decreased.

Spurs should be somewhat busy this summer. Since Ange Postecoglou has been demanding changes at the team, there will be a lot of activity when the transfer window starts in June.

This summer, Tottenham will probably sign one, if not two, new defenders; since the beginning of 2024, they have been connected to over a dozen players.

Updates on one of them have been given by Fabrizio Romano.

Tottenham has been connected to Riccardo Calafiori for a few months now.

First circulating in January, reports suggested that Spurs are seriously considering signing the adaptable Bologna defender.

The following months saw a strengthening of such ties, with reports at the end of March indicating Tottenham was eager to recruit him and even the favourites (Il Pallano Gonfiato).

With his versatility—he could play left-sided center-half, left-back, and even left-winger—Calafiori, who had an outstanding 2023–24 season at Bologna, was seen as a perfect match for Tottenham.

Romano has now provided an update on Calafiori’s future that may infuriate some Tottenham supporters.

The journalist said on X that this summer, the Bologna defender linked to Spurs has “said yes” to joining Juventus.

After taking over as manager of Calafiori at Bologna, Thiago Motta intends to bring the defender to Juventus.

To Tottenham, it is a serious blow.

“Juventus are now focused on advancing on Riccardo Calafiori as next signing after Di Gregorio deal done,” tweeted Romano.

“Calafiori agreed to Juventus working with Motta once again; personal arrangements will be worked out. Next are club-to-club discussions; players could be part of the agreement.

The attempt by Tottenham to acquire another adaptable defender has also failed

Tottenham needs to cover Destiny Udogie and Micky van de Ven at the back.

With those two players missing games because of injury, Spurs truly suffered, thus Postecoglou will be eager to address that problem in his team.

Tottenham should recruit one player who can play left-sided center-half and left-back at the same time.

Calafiori was thus an excellent fit, but it seems Tottenham lost out on him when he “said yes” to joining Juventus.

Not only the Bologna player has been passed over by Spurs; Lloyd Kelly, a left- and left-center-back, is another target who is said to be heading elsewhere.

Watching who Spurs pursue next will be fascinating.
