Spurs and Brentford sly swap deal could give both clubs the transfer boost they need
Brentford are having a rough time right now. They are only three points away from being in danger, and even though they have a game in hand, it’s against Manchester City. On the pitch, they haven’t been terrible, but they are having trouble scoring goals, and even though Thomas Frank’s method still seems to work, they lack some creativity. Simply put, they need another Christian Eriksen.
Tottenham Hotspur is doing well right now, but Ange Postecoglou definitely wants to make some changes in the middle of the pitch. Brentford isn’t the only team that needs help in the middle right now. He does not seem to be sure about players like Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg. They have been looking for hard-running, box-to-box midfielders like their Australian coach likes, which is why they are interested in Conor Gallagher.
But Conor Gallagher might not come if Chelsea can get the money they need by selling someone else (Armando Broja has been put up for auction lately for this reason), and Brentford can’t just reach into thin air and pull out a playmaker. However, these two teams could help each other out.
Brentford’s midfielders are very active and will run themselves into the ground in a high press. They are also happy to get back and make tackles as well as rush forward to help attackers. Giovani Lo Celso is a talented midfielder for Spurs who has the vision and passing range to give Brentford the extra attacking depth they need. However, he is currently being wasted.
The Argentine attacking player hasn’t really nailed down the number ten spot, even though James Maddison is hurt and there is a clear opening. Just four league games have been played so far, and he hasn’t played the whole 90 minutes once. A few small injuries have happened, and he’s currently dealing with one. But in the end, it seems like Spurs won’t need him for much longer.
That’s partly because he doesn’t work well with Postecoglou’s style and isn’t the all-action, ball-carrying player he likes. He isn’t as good as Maddison at standing a man up one-on-one and making overloads in behind them all the time. But he can pass the ball very far, has a great eye for a killer ball, and can also score goals, as his goals against Aston Villa and Manchester City show. All of those things are very important for Brentford because without Bryan Mbeumo, they have become a weak tool in attack.
While this is going on, Spurs probably wouldn’t look down on some of Brentford’s tough centre midfielders. Some players, like Christian Nørgaard and Mathias Jensen, have a lot of the same skills. They are both good at causing mistakes, have a lot of energy, are ready to go up the field, get a lot of loose balls and shots, and can pass the ball pretty well.
For this made-up transfer, Postecoglou would probably choose Jensen because he has the extra ball-carrying skill that makes a big difference in the friendly Aussie’s system. On the other hand, Brentford would probably gently push Nørgaard out the door because he’s a year older at 29 and only has 18 months left on his contract. But either way, Spurs would get more players in a key area and Brentford would get someone to give the team some spark again.
This is, of course, just a fictional case. In a year, we doubt Lo Celso will still be at Spurs. However, it wouldn’t surprise us if Frank took a chance on him, like he did with Eriksen. It was a different team when the Dane was in charge of middle at the Community Stadium. They gained skill and beauty in addition to their strength and hard work. They look a little heavy because they couldn’t find an option.
Ivan Toney is finally back from his long suspension for breaking the FA’s gambling rules. This will probably make a huge difference in how many goals they score, but having the best number nine in the world won’t help you score many goals if you don’t have good service coming in from behind. Brentford lacks direction and energy right now because they don’t have Mbeumo or an Eriksen-like playmaker.
Tottenham, on the other hand, has plenty of toughness, graft, and box-to-box movement when players like Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Yves Bissouma are on the pitch. But if they manage to get back into Europe next season, they will need more players, especially if Postecoglou gets his way and makes some changes.
Of course, swap deals don’t happen very often these days, so this is just a short way to talk about two good choices for two teams with different needs in the future, as well as a way forward for two players who might not be around forever. Lo Celso is talented enough to do well in the right setting, but it doesn’t look like Spurs will be that setting. Nørgaard, on the other hand, is getting close to 30 years old and has earned the right to play at the next level. Brentford probably won’t be able to get any more money for him. This move would make a lot of sense. But then again, this is the market for transfers. When did it ever make sense?
