Talks expected: Spurs planning early move for £60M superstar who’d be their own Saka – opinion

Tottenham Hotspur fans must be feeling mixed feelings now that the 2023/24 season has come to an end.

Missing out on a Champions League berth would have been immensely frustrating, but progress has been made under Ange Postecoglou.

It’s fair to argue that the difference has been the absence of a real game changer, such as Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka, and if Heung-min Son had received more help, the Lilywhites may have accomplished their aim.

Nonetheless, the Australian manager will be looking forward to next season, particularly if they can sign their own version of Saka before the transfer window closes.

Spurs look for a new attacker
According to Football Transfers, Tottenham are aiming to make Eberechi Eze their first summer acquisition.

Spurs will “initiate discussions” this month as they try to recruit the ace for a £60 million asking price.

The number ten will not push his way out of Crystal Palace, but he thinks they will let him depart if the needed sum is paid.

However, the Lilywhites will not be alone in their pursuit of the English international, as Chelsea and both Manchester teams are also interested in him.

How does Eze compare to Saka?

Every Spurs fan is wired to dislike everything about Arsenal, but one thing they can’t ignore is Saka’s brilliance.

The Gunners’ number seven has been absolutely outstanding under Mikel Arteta, scoring 16 goals and giving nine assists in the Premier League last season.

Only Son has a higher production than any other winger in the Spurs side, and Daniel Levy will be looking for someone with a similar profile to the England star.

This is where Eze comes in, and considering his power at Palace, he may become Spurs’ very own Saka if he joins.

According to FBref’s comparable players model, Eze and Saka’s statistics are quite similar.

To begin, the two English stars are very dangerous in front of goal; some would describe them as a nightmare to play against, especially because of their propensity to score from nothing, as seen by their xG outperformance.

They’re incredibly confident players that attack directly, often driving at defenders with the goal of either creating a combination or working half a yard of space to get a shot off.

Furthermore, Saka and Eze are unusual, owing to the fact that they can operate as a source of creativity in addition to being goal threats, as seen by their vital passes.

Furthermore, their effect on the team extends well beyond what they contribute in front of goal, as their off-the-ball work rate and energy are equally contagious.

However, what distinguishes Eze as a “superstar” in particular, as named by analyst Ben Mattinson, is his ability to glide past opponents as if they are not even there, because to his superb agility, power, and ball control.

This would also make him an improvement above Maddison, who only dribbles 1.1 times per game in the Premier League and mostly produces via passing.

Overall, Eze is the sort of player that can propel Spurs forward, and his acquisition may be the best purchase of the summer, especially if they can find a player of Saka’s calibre.
