Spurs plotting dream signing of Gallagher partner in 6ft 3 leader who’s like Dembele

Once again, the Premier League season is over. Now, Tottenham Hotspur’s focus will likely turn to what could be another busy summer of signing new players.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino quit his job at rivals Chelsea after a rough first season at Stamford Bridge. For Ange Postecoglou, however, this is likely just the start of a successful relationship.

The former Celtic manager led the club to fifth place in his first full season in charge. He will be looking for more players before next season, and there are already a lot of stories going around about who will be going to N17 in the coming months…

A claim from TEAMtalk says that the Lilywhites are planning to make an offer to sign Blues captain Conor Gallagher from their west London foes. The Englishman has been highly linked with a move away from his current team, with only a year left on his current contract.

According to the article, though, the 24-year-old may not be the only English midfielder that Tottenham is interested in. Postecoglou and his team are also thought to be among the sides that want to sign Wouter Burger, a star player for Stoke City.

It is said that the Dutchman, who signed the Potters from Basel for £4.3 million last year, could be available for around £12 million, which would make him a great deal for any top team.

Why Spurs should try to get Wouter Burger

Steven Schumacher, the manager of Stoke, called the 23-year-old a “leader.” He had a good first season in English football after moving there last summer, hitting three goals and setting up four others in 39 Championship games.

Ben Rowley, a podcaster for Stoke, said that the former Netherlands U21 international would “certainly be a Premier League player” soon. The player has been getting a lot of support lately, and talent scout Jacek Kulig has even said that he looks a lot like Mousa Dembele.

These two players are a lot like the former Spurs star, whom Pochettino called a “genius” when he was manager in north London. They both prefer to shoot with their left foot and are very tall, with Dembele standing at 6 feet 1 and Burger at an impressive 6 feet 3.

The two players also seem to have a similar playing style because they can mix a tough, strong style of striking with a graceful, calm style when they have the ball.

Above, you can see how Dembele did so well for Spurs in the 2016–17 season, when they came second in the league. He averaged 2.1 tackles per game and 0.8 key passes per game, while Burger is just ahead of him in 23–24 with 2.6 and 0.9 for those same two measures.

Postecoglou would be in for a treat if the former Feyenoord star could even come close to having the same effect on north London as the talented Belgian. Burger might be a good fit next to Gallagher, who likes to attack.

Zach Lowy, a writer, has said that the second player could provide a more “box-to-box” presence, especially with Burger behind him. Burger is a stable player who can make an impact in the final third and has scored 16 goals and set up 16 others this season across all tournaments.

Burger’s imaginative skills could also help find Gallagher in key scoring areas. In the second tier in 2023–24, the in-demand player made seven “big chances.”

Fans of Spurs may want to sign more high-profile players this summer before they return to European competition, but the chance to get the “next Dembele” to play with Gallagher could be too good to pass up.
